Pete. Modern version (from 1994 and on) is coded as 11823 (chrome) or 11831 (black). I thought that the modern version had been launched after the M6J, i.e. 1996 but i may be wrong. Anyway my 1962 version was coded 11612 if i remember well, my 1996 one with the M6J could be 11824 (not sure) and my black 2004 is indeed 11831. Yep you're right it was first intrudeced with the M6J from 1995 and on, but the lens/camera were built starting from 1994 so you may find s/n from 36xxxxx and on. Nice camera anyway! Yes, I may be wrong, but I remember of an elmar with 367xxxx s/n in my hand ,and that was dated 1995 in the s/n table from Leica.Dunno if it was part of a M6J kit, but I'm sure it was the latest version. Thanks -g ! I actually have the "newest" 50/2.8 and I also have the two VGHT collapsible 50s, the 50/2 Heliar and the 50/3.5 Heliar. The Leica 50/2.8 is one of my all time favorites, excellent performance and the lens is a breeze to focus (very nice action). I also am a sucker for 4 element 50s, I have Nikon 45mm P lenses as well (all have nice OOF areas). I would highly recommend the Leica as well as the 50/2 Heliar. Although the focus action is a bit rougher the lens is a beauty, I really like it. For the price the image quality is excellent (though it is high contrast). The 50/3.5 is absurdly sharp with a very unique f-stop adjustment ring, I really like it. It is, however, a little awkward feeling to use. Anyway, back to the topic at hand, don't think twice about getting the Leica 50/2.8, it's terrific. Kent ps- I think one or the other Heliars are actually 5 element designs.
