I was in a Leica Store today (sadly the M262 was behind glass), but the staff member told me that the shutter was exactly the same as the M240. The slightly quieter sound apparently is simply a result of the top plate being aluminium.

Mmmm...the truth of the matter is a little unclear. Leica states that the shutter cocking mechanism of the 262 is quieter than that of the 240. But not why. Implicit is something different in the shutter mechanism itself.  To me it matters little, since I find the 240/246 quiet enough anyway.

I think photographers used 21 and 24 with an external VF on their film Ms. Any reason not to do it with the 262 ? Just asking.

robert

PS: I understand that LV or EVF could give a little more precision in framing of course.

No Leica, whether film or digital, has 24mm framelines (well M8 had but the effective FL is 31mm, and a version of the Voigtlander Bessa R4A I think had 21mm and 24mm framelines)

Many people, me included, use 24/25mm without an EVF, using the corners of the OVF. Its difficult to do if you wear glasses however .... could use a diopter correction, might help

Some people do the same with the 21mm but you kind of gusessing. However although it sounds crazy, if you keep both eyes open you can see the framelines superimposed on the full scene and you can get an idea over time of roughly whats in 21mm, not ideal however. But I intend to at least try this with my new 21mm, when it comes....

What's the minimum focal length that doesn't require evf or live view?

EVF or LV are never required with wides in that external OVFs can be used with focal lengths wider than 50mm. Now if you don't like external OVFs, EVF/LV are required below 28mm unless you don't mind using the entire VF window as an aproximation for 24mm field of view, which implies that you don't wear spectacles generally.

I also think that 50mm is the maximum without RF magnification (which I do not use). My APO Summicron 75 is now on the A7R2.

That is not borne out by the facts. With the RF magnification of the M9/M240 the tipping point is 90 mm. In the end it all depends on your eyesight and technique.

One one can eat crumpets straight out of the packet and with experience, imagine how they should taste. One can frame a 21 using the rangefinder and with experience, imagine how it will look.

Or, one could toast the crumpets, butter them and serve them with your favourite cup of coffee. One could frame a 21 using the EVF and tilt it using the artificial horizon.

A little bit more work; a more satisfying outcome.

90mm / 2,0  you mean.  Practice , practice , practice makes perfect, until your eyesight degrades.

12mm

Voigtlander Ultra Wide Heliar 12mm f/5.6 Aspherical II

with finder of course, optical that is, they do still fit accessory shoes don't they?

You get live view as well, no lag, well actually there is but given the speed of light from subject to eye and even adding in neurone transmission and brain processing time that is minimal and with practice you can anticipate the release.

I think the original question should be intended as: What is the minimum FL that makes sense to use witht the RF only (i.e. without an external VF, electronic or optical).

External optical VF are medieval and a PITA to use.
