SL with 280mm f/4 APO-Telyt-R + APO-Extender-R 1.4X, ISO 1600, f/5.6, 1/1600...

Brown-Throated Sunbird...

Great Shot on a male sunbird!

Thank you.

And looking at the great photos you and others have shared that were taken with the 90-280mm, I'm wondering whether I should stick with this oldie-but-goodie lens, or update to the world of modern coatings, autofocus and OIS.  Assuming IQ to be equal, the only advantage of the 280mm APO I can think of would be the availability of extenders.

I've considered the same and the thing that stops me is that if I used the 90-280 on a camera other than the SL (and perhaps the T/TL/TL2) I wouldn't get the optical corrections that the software quietly carries out in the background.  That might not be of any consequence to you but I also shoot the 280/4 with other cameras such as  a Canon 5D Mk II and a Sigma SD15.

Pete.

Surely there aren't that many optical corrections on such a focal length?

I still keep my APO R180mm Elmarit.

Who could know since Leica doesn't publish such info?  However, geometrical distortion is likely to be one important one for me, particularly at the long end.

Can an SL/TL mount lens even be used on something like the Canon 5D?  The flange-to-sensor distance would surely be too short and you would need some kind of optical intervention in the adapter...

Good food for thought.

In addition to being adaptable to other bodies, the 280 APO's optics can take it well into the future.  Even on  a 20mp m43 sensor with no OLPF, which would extrapolate (area-wise) to roughly 77mp on full frame, it shows neither optical anomaly nor any limit to its resolving capability.

Although R-mount lenses were "orphaned" by their maker, the better ones will have no trouble finding homes well into the foreseeable future!
