New Leica M in September 2016? The speculations.

Because I cannot imagine Leica going a long way with an optical-only RF

and the SL is very big , there is nearly no difference between a SL and a Canon 5D series

 

Actually the SL is nearly exactly the same size and weight as an M240 with a grip and EVF added. A 1Dx is very big. I don't think the SL is that big for a full frame mirrorless camera.

 

The lenses are very big. But they're very good.

Actually, for REAL photographers I suggest that Leica bring to market an all new camera but very backwards compatible - the T-less. Compact, light and very strong and (milled from pure titanium) and able to take a huge variety of lenses via adapters. This should feature 'less from everything' - a marketing caption if ever I saw one. No T type EVF (its a bit of a bolt on gimmick anyway) and certainly not a built in EVF (not from the SL). No rear LCD as featured (or not featured) in the M-D. No rangefinder as in the (original) MD  . No, no - no autofocus - perish the thought. No built in flash either (pointless and so amateurish) - replaced by the merest hint of usability - a flash socket (high voltage protected) hidden away under an almost invisible touch sensitive flap. In essence, a camera stripped back to the absolute essentials only (well way beyond actually) - almost impossible to use of course, but hey we're being pedantic here now aren't we?

The grippy protuberance is only at the front of the camera. The (multifunction) grip adds about a centimetre to the height.

Not length (width). The SL is a few mm wider than the M. The grip adds height and depth (handgrip part). As does the EVF. With the GPS grip (I have both types of grip for the M) and EVF, to give the same basic functionality to the M that the SL has, they're very close to each other in any dimension and in weight. With those accessories the M is slightly less wide but has a few mm more in height. The bodies as similar in depth but the SL handgrip is still bigger than the M with grip. But with a lens on you don't see/feel any real world difference. Weight difference is about 45 grams, from memory. Close enough that if you lad up an M you may as well shoot with an SL.

 

It'd be lovely if the next M had a hybrid finder like the XPro2 and an option of lighter materials. But as it is the M isn't actually a super lightweight camera anyway. It's a solid little beast.

 

When I bought my SL it was because I wanted to have the EVF and a flash on camera at the same time. It was the closeness in size and weight to what i was using (M240 w' MF grip and EVF) that attracted me to the SL in the first place.

 

I was using the MF grip/flash etc which is quite uncomfortable in use. It was only after I got the SL that I decided to get the zooms and replace other cameras. Then the Novoflex adaptor came out of nowhere and everything changed for me.

Well it's sure that adding accessories to the M will get it even bigger but i find it too fat as is already and its length/width is closer to film Ms (139 vs 138mm) than the SL which is closer to the Leicaflex (147 vs 148mm). Makes a significant difference for people like me who always preferred R4/R7 bodies (139mm) and are now quite pleased with the 127mm of the Sony A7. YMMV.

Of course, if you add accessories to the M it will get bigger. I can't think of many cameras to which this rule doesn't apply.

 

That is one of the advantages of accessories: you can remove them when you don't need them, or when smaller size is more important.

 

In this respect the expandable M has the advantage over the shrink-proof SL, and one of many reasons why they are different cameras.

Yep. The design and features of the next M are already fixed and won’t change due to anything written in this thread – even when the next M won’t be introduced at this year’s photokina, but at a later date, be it in 2016 or 2017.

 

I only  hope the design and features of the next M are correlated with the year of release, at least in regards to the sensor.

If they release new M in 2017 with specs defined in 2014/15... ...well, I think you got my point.

With the announcement at LeicaRumors of a titanium M240, the rumors have come to an end, and there will be no new M at PK2016 with the exception of this expensive titan version!
