Maybe it's my English, but what has to be available in a M more than shutterspeed, when I already know the diafragm and the iso?

Well, battery level, choice of anything auto, some might want histogram. Error messages, like card full, or change battery. Frame lines could be adjusted to your preference for a particular lens.

But it could even go one step further, press a button if you want to see through the lens, press the button again and back to the normal rangefinder. No moving if the head to a new location. All done from the one place.

I don't know if I would use this, but it's interesting from a geek perspective.

I still don't understand why M(240) owners are so sensitive to what is fair criticism.

....

John,

Please don't count me in among the fangirls answering you :) . The M is a great camera, but have some shortcomings that can be improved. Quite a few don't want to face reality. I we were to listen to them we would still be sitting in a cave - without a fire going  .

A real innovation, but difficult to implement, is a sensor cleaning system.

It is difficult, but the SL has one.

This would bring real and substantial added value. A real improvement.

Not that much of an innovation as other camera manufactures have been doing it for years. The Nikon D800 was released before the M 240 and had it then.

No doubt the replacement for the M240 has been in development for some considerable time. The much improved processor, sensor and EVF already exists in the form of the SL and Q.

Why then are we having to wait until September next year?

It will give more time to test the camera properly.

Well... because we must have time to save money apart. for example... :D

Seriously speaking, for me is a correct markeing and indusrial tactic... two announcements of their most important product lines must be reasonably spaced... and their production lines, for so important cameras, must be optimized without risky investiments on capacity. Also, monitoring which kind of customers buy the SL can be important to "tune" the contents of the new M.

John,

Don't count me in as a Leica fanboy, either.  And, I'm sitting in my cave with a fire... just lit it with my new Leica 0.95 Lighter so I could scribble on the walls with my new Leica 0.95 Pen!    :p  :D  :p

You know you want one.

Surely a fixed diopter is more convenient than one which will be knocked to a different position by camera de-bagging? Not so much of an issue for the EVF diopter as that device has to be installed after taking the camera out of the bag and you can check the setting then.

Olympus introduced it with the E-1 in 2003, and that system is what the SL has a derivative of. I'd love to have it in the M-P.

If I wanted the above, I would have bought a different camera long ago. The power of the M is that all these things are not in the viewfinder IMHO.

I realise that being happy with a camera for almost 20 years has nothing to do with " geek " things but with reliability.

Make the digital M a tiny bit more reliable and I would be a happy costumer.

In anology with a bicylce: You can make it more electronic and even so that it drives you without pedalling, but it's just not my choise. Just give me a reliable " city bike " on which I can transport loads of groceries without problems: Strong and reliant and weatherproof without to much servicing.
