Dear All,

I just bought a Leica M9 and have been testing it out only to find a thing red line appearing on the right hand side of all my photographs. Sample attached. Does anyone know why this is happening?

Also, my viewfinder is a bit strange. When I am using it I am able to align the ghost square over the square, but other times I have nothing to align meaning when I am looking through the viewfinder i see what is in front of me only. I have to take a couple of unfocused pics to get the focus point to appear again or switch off/on the camera. Has this happened to anyone before?

Thank you for the response everyone!

How can I remap the sensor? Would I need to take it into a Leica shop? I bought this camera on ebay.

I'm not sure if it was because of my finger but I will test it today, finger on and off to see if that was the cause of it all.

Thanks again!

There is no mechanical or electronic link between the rangefinder and the rest of the camera, so the fact it "reappears" after taking pictures is chance. Be reassured this is not related to the sensor issue. For that it is either money back from e-bay or you pay for a re-map at your nearest Leica facility. Welcome to Leica world!

You will have to send the M9 back to Leica for remapping. M9 sensors are suffering from 'corrossion' issues too so ask them to check that at the same time.

As others have said the 'disappearing' rangefinder patch will be due to blocking the window on the front with a stray finger. There's nothing electronic to do with the patch so when you turned the camera off/on it reappeared because you'd moved your finger in the process!

  • 2 weeks later...

I experienced the same problem earlier with my M9. A thin red line appearing on the lower left of the frame, continues from bottom up to about half the height of the image. It happens when the photo is underexposed and pushed up in pp. With well-exposed shots I don't really see it.

It didn't bother me too much, however, and I continued to use it in the normal way.

Mysteriously it disappeared after a week or so...

Now that Leica has got the new-gen CCD sensor...I wonder if they'll replace yours with the new one if you send in your camera due to this problem.. The official document does say they'd only replace sensors affected by the corrosion problem with the new one. So if the red line doesn't bother you too much..maybe just wait a bit ?

If it disappeared there is no reason to worry, just test it at all ISO settings. If you have to send it in the sensor will normally not be replaced, just remapped, unless the number of remapped pixels would exceed the maximum number allowed. In that case I cannot imagine Leica replacing it with anything but the new type sensor.
