.... Assuming the M continues, which I guess it will do for the foreseeable future, the emphasis shift towards a T mount Q with AF will, I fear, direct the M down a developmental dead end towards eventual obsolescence. :(......

There is a lot to develop on the current M, with available and upcoming new technology, to bring it up to date and to continue to play an important role for Leica in their niche market .

So there is no need voor despair, I think the M will stay as their, or at least one of their USP's!

Just wait and see the price and the bulk of the next full frame AF lenses and you will see how up-to-date the old M/ZM/CV lenses can be. Also the next EVIL will be optimized for its own lenses of course so to get the best out of M lenses, the "obsolete" M will remain the only solution.

I am looking forward to my great grandchildren using the latest M for their holiday on Titan, whilst still sneeking a few cheeky Fuji Superia's through their M7/MP ;) whilst using the Google camera embedded in their skull for the boring Facebook stream .....

I think when my sons, eventually get hold of my M(s), literally over my dead body, they'll all be sent off to be sold pronto. One of them, a keen photographer himself, cannot fathom why I continue to employ such "archaic technology". ;)

It'll grow on him

My 10 year old loves my M240, its replaced her canon compact along with her iPhone as a go to ... When she can get her hands on it ...

Whomever is the head of marketing at Leica right now, if he or she is reading this, is, first, laughing uproariously at this speculative fever, and next, anticipating a bonus.  I've been tuning into this forum since 2003, when there was eager speculation about what the Digilux 2 would be like, and never have I seen such wild speculations as can be found on the previous 35 -- 35! -- pages of this thread. This makes anticipation of the M8 seem so last decade...

All that is certain is that if --when? -- a new M is released this fall, there will be a furious eruption about its strengths/deficiencies, with an End Times Coming series of pronouncements worthy of a cult fearing doom.  And if there also is, or instead is, a new platform camera, prepare for the same!

One way or another, Leica's most engaged customers are working themselves into a speculative lather. Well done, Leica marketing honcho!

Nothing wrong with some enthusiastic free thinking about the potential developments of a new design once in a while. Keeps the grey matter alive. It doesn't make me suddenly expect that the next M is the ultimate one, with all the speculation included in the camera.

As ever I have modest expectations. Incremental improvements are the norm with Leica, a new paradigm for the M would be a revolution. This is not to be expected (so soon) from new leadership.

And don't give the credits to Leica, they belong to this Forum!!

Despite  the fact that I feel guilty for this topic  I just can confirm my previous statement - new M will be announced this Fall:)

Slimmer for sure!

This is a very unequivocal statement, Edward.  What's it based on?

The only person on this thread who actually knows (Michael) has said no new M this year.  What do you know that the rest of us don't?

I don't believe this statement about Michael's guidance is correct. He has said, oh, 15 pages back or so -- yeah, I checked -- that if Leica's 3-year M release cycle holds, we wouldn't see deliveries until 2016. But I don't take that as his saying in any definitive way that there won't be an M announced this year.  And that is, really, what this thread is about: what is Leica going to announce in the weeks ahead?

Where does he say that?

Post #599 from mjh...  "The M (Typ 240) started shipping in 2013 so if Leica sticks to a 3 year product cycle its successor should ship in 2016. And who says it won’t?"

Beyond that, in post #620, he merely clarifies that the M-E will be at the same time...

Could it be the new M is a stripped version of the 240, maybe without video, something like the ME compared to the original M?

"Short answer: No.

Slightly longer answer: The next M-E will be announced when the new M is. As the next M-E will probably be a variant of the M (Typ 240) with virtually all the features offered by the latter, introducing it any earlier wouldn’t make sense."

What I mean to say is : of course they could use the T mount, or any other mount for that matter, but when designing new, why not design an optimum mount for FF and any requirements the lens designers might have?

Good question … If you take a closer look at the mount sizes of mirrorless systems for APS-C or MFT, you see that these are similar to the mount diameters of 35 mm SLR systems introduced in the previous century. That is the ratio between throat size and image circle diameter has changed, from about 1.0 for 35 mm SLRs to between 1.5 and 2.0 for newer mirrorless systems (according to Olympus’ calculations, 2.0 would be the ideal ratio). So there is a general trend towards short flange distances and wide mounts – a wide mount fits a large rear element that is required for a (near) telecentric lens delivering light rays that are near perpendicular up to the edges of the sensor.

Now if one would design a 35 mm mirrorless system along the same lines, the mount size would resemble those of existing medium-format systems. It might turn out that no vendor dares to actually go this route and that they will all try to make do with smaller mounts. That’s what Sony has done.

Perhaps I dreamt it, or misread Michael's response to Robert in relation to the M-E at post #620 in this thread.  I had a brief look and couldn't find what I was looking for (I certainly don't mean to put words into Michael's mouth - I apologise to him for that).

At some stage, we will find out, I guess!  New system, new M, and I'm still waiting for my 28 Summilux.  The best bit will be when Leica actually releases something.  Some will be very happy (Steve Huff?), some will be disappointed (BarJohn?) and others will find fault, or perhaps just be baffled (DigiLLoyd).  Meanwhile, Jono will say that he is happy, and they really are great cameras, and the fruit and vege man will give us the finest detail of a series of test shots which will all look the same to the mortals among us, accompanied by pictures of the backs of people's heads at the local fair.

And Leica will make pots more money - all sounds good to me!
