Why would M users be delighted with a EVF ? I am delighted with an EVF on my A7, I don't want it near my M.

Perhaps a hybrid but for me this is not a deciding feature.

If it is as good as the EVF on the Q, and can make for a thinner body, I'd love it on an M. Accessory finders and wide framelines with eyeglasses begone, and I find focusing with the Q at least as fast as with the M. Of course, I suppose that it may not be possible to make focusing with an EVF as good as a Q without camera-control of the aperture.

Electronic settings are fiddle and require power. The M240 only needs energy to take the pictures. It's a tremendous advantage for fast street and fixed focus lengths like buildings and landscapes.

White balance, exposure compensation are not useful for me.

My M240 is ready to take a picture after I have flicked the button.

No slow AF to wait for to focus on the wrong thing or to be held whilst I change settings, bleu bleu

Yeah. Try it at night or under fluorescent lighting

As repeated from 10 pages ago, turning the M into another CSC is pointless. A MF EVF CSC (:)) makes no sense.

Leica may have one of those on the 20th and Sony already does.

I want RF, OVF, MF, simplicity a brass top and those lenses.

Good luck with your EVFs .....

Just curious.  Does anyone remember when Leica's viral-marketing department would usually put the SL on a Leica site for a few hours... then take it down?  I've forgotten, is that about one week before the product launch?

Including a link to the manual ..... a broken link  :p

And just imagine how this could be improved in the next M. Perhaps an unpowered sensor and mechanical shutter.

Oh, wait, that was my M2 and MC meter. They used to let me take it into North Sea gas terminals because it was "intrinsically safe" even if they couldn't find a safety standard to apply to it.

I bet there were grumbles when the MR meter was introduced with its newfangled battery....all this electrical stuff.....bound to go wrong....

Exactly. Was for tourists and amateurs. Serious photogs never used this thing. :D

In 2006, there was a slow striptease of the M8 put up on a French site in segments of about 1/8th of the body size, and it started rolling out, oh, a week or two before the official unveiling.  Remember that? But the M8 had roughly the same form factor as the M7, so you didn't learn all that much as a new picture, like a day in an Advent calendar, was revealed.

M9 and M had rumored specs out there, but no pics.

Leica has kept a pretty good clamp on information with 16 days to go.  Dammit.

Why would M users be delighted with a EVF ? ....

Thinking seriously of my photography "needs" ....  my only concern as of today (with M240) is that I feel A BIT (no more than a bit) of annoyance to take out of its case my (honest) Oly EVF and mount it on the M when I want to use >135mm lenses... in macro situations, is a minor hassle... macro is never a "quick" operation... so I think that my possible desire for the SL is limited to this... AF is a way of taking I never experienced (apart cellphone taking... :p ) and personally don't feel any "need" of it... zooming is also a feature I never experienced... and the pixels of M240 are more than sufficient for "crop when worths" for the prints I make... in conclusion, I think that SL must have really something STRONGLY appealing on the pure photographic side to make me desiring it... and probably will wait anyway to see what will come out on the M line in the future... it's around 30 years that my "standard camera" has been a Leica M and (many years ago) did consider my TLR Rolleiflex its only serious alternative... definitely, it's hard that I decide to switch to another system, even supposing that my lenses' set works fine on it.

Assuming there is a new M this year (has to be high probability, I'd have thought), there's no reason to think it has anything to do with the presumed new SL. I don't know what the CSC is you're talking about Harold, but if Leica makes a new EVF system, why would they do anything to the optical viewfinder?  That's a permanent fixture on the M I'd had thought. Think about it - the optical viewfinder defines the M, including the range of its lenses.

My guess is that the M will get a better Visoflex and improvements here and there, but they won't change the fundamental functionality, I'd have thought. I don't see another M in my future. I have four and love them all. You can say what you like about my M60, but just because it shares a sensor with the M(240), doesn't make it the same camera from a user's point of view, and that's all that counts for me. Great camera, which I doubt will be made again.

If if I need to replace an M, it will be second hand, or i will add an SL body. Perfect!

And Harold, if your M(240) is perfect for you, I'm very happy for you. Seriously. Presumably, you don't need to worry to much about what happens next.

The new SL will blow you all away........all the diehard rangefinder users will sill stick with the old technology rangefinder but those of us that want the latest and greatest will make the switch ........... Potentially this could be the end of the M as we know it[emoji3][emoji23][emoji15][emoji12]

There must be something about the M which appeals to you Neil because you still hang out in this forum despite having resigned from the gang.

Not sure what you mean..................Yes I got rid of my old M gear and replaced it with the S gear......................... but I am very interested in getting the SL as well and seeing as this thread is the only one that has any info/BS whatever you want to call it..............that's why I am hanging out here :)

We do have a small thread in the S users forum regarding the new SL but nothing as juicy as this thread :)

Assuming the SL is a new mirrorless camera with AF and a mount that is not the M mount, it would have little to do with the M system. Having said that its introduction could actually strengthen the position of the M as a rangefinder camera. Those who want the M to become something it isn’t would have an alternative within Leica’s portfolio and could stop pestering Leica to mess with the M.

This is the point.

I think it would be great if the M played purely to its strengths - lenses in the range 18 to 135 (though, practically 28-90 is its strength), with an optical viewfinder.  If it was left at that, then indifferent EVF's, inability of the processor to deal with upgraded EVF's and average to poor video might, just might become irrelevant.  The "options" of the M(240) (e.g. being the R solution) came at the cost of blurring these fundamental strengths (and, no Harold, I'm not alone in thinking this).

My M3 is worth fixing and works pretty much as well as it did when it was new; my M-A will follow suit; the jury is out how long Leica will be prepared/able to repair my M60 and Monochrom.  That makes them pretty irrational "consumables".  Better get out and take some pictures!

Cheers

John
