NEW M.. This year.. This Fall...

I think Fuji will release a mirrorless medium format before Leica does.

There is nothing anywhere to indicate that Leica have any concrete plans for a mirrorless medium format camera.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

In the meantime, there seem to be some inconsistencies between the different rumours.  I find it hard to believe there will be a new SL line AND a new interchangeable-lens Q line AND a new M all within the next year.  Based on the source of the rumours, I think the SL is almost certain.  Of the others, it's not clear.

Oh, and What about the X-U (or whatever it was going to be called)?

The SL and interchangeable lens Q are the same rumor. There are no rumors about a new M this year.

Indeed. As for the M, it's only a matter of calendar: M9 was announced on September 9th, 2009 and M (Typ 240) on September 17th, 2012, so people are perhaps expecting a new M to be announced on September 25th, 2015? ^_^

Personally I don't find the EVF2 performance to be a big issue - it works ok for me as an occasional ancillary aid when needed and I'm glad to have it in the bag just in case.

What would be a big improvement would be if it was possible via a firmware fix to reduce the black out time; I don't expect it can be completely removed with the M240 hardware limitations, but say a quarter/third of the current duration would be a really nice improvement!

A photokina year (e.g. 2012) can distort the cycle, see Michael's earlier post (no.740) in this thread.

That would make sense since the actual exhibit at PhotoPlus begins on Thursday, October 22 in New York City.  I expect to attend on the 22nd and Leica is usually my first booth that I visit at 10:00 upon opening.

I also frequently attend the show at least in part with my friend Jim Lager, that many of the forum members will know from his I believe it is 8 books on Leica cameras.  I am sure that Jim will also be interested, but I suspect as beautiful a camera and system he will not be able to afford the camera.  I suspect that I may not be able to afford the camera as well.

oh hu... "Be one of the first to experience the next chapter in the history of professional photography..." what is this straight allusion to "professional" ? Seems I'm not in their target... (which can mean "whew...")

Allusion to amateurs would sound somewhat provocative for the most expensive EVIL ever made i suspect...

Ok, first post on this thread... I could be interested in this camera.  Maybe, the timing will work out (for me) so that I will get a chance to experience the new camera, assuming it will be a Q-like camera that accepts M lenses, and it comes to market before a new M arrives.  I'd be very interested in a camera like that especially if it plays well with my collection of M lenses.  Not to mention my R lenses, so I won't mention it.

I could then just keep my M for what I like about it - the RF.  Could be a really nice combination and who knows... maybe I'll end up liking the EVF for much of what I do with MF and I've always expressed that I could sure use an AF lens take pictures of the kids.

Waiting patiently with M in hand,

Rick

Pro cameras are changing. The long dominance of SLRs is being seriously challenged as EVFs improve. And already many pros use lighter more compact cameras for many situations. (The main exception being sports.) What makes a pro camera? Ruggedness, reliability, performance, and versatility are key.

The M, while brilliant, still has limited functionality, while the S also targets a niche market, mainly commercial photography. I think most pros would see other current Leica models more as a backup than main system cameras. (The T being the only other system camera, and not really a pro model.)

Bottom line: A new Leica for professional photographers may be a winner. The pro market is huge. I hope this camera will be a real camera for photographers as opposed to another S/E luxo model for celebrities. A game changer? It remains to be seen, but the potential is there.

Well said.
