I had pending a comparison between the phase one files and the S3. The first one corresponds to the Phase with the 80 mm (about 48 mm in ff), and it is a panorama of 3 rows of three images taken with tripod at 1/400th and f9. The second, much wider, is from the S3 (with the 30 mm). The color is more pleasing, but the image lacks focus and has a bit of shake (was taken at f 5.6 and 1/90th). The third image, same lens, but more comparable (1/250th and f 8, has excellent definition, so I would say that with the proper technique the S3 can hold its ground very well. Neither of the images has final edition, only verticals and a few basic adjustments.

Wouldn’t that scene not be a candidate for b/w conversion? It might end up in Hilla Becher territory, atmosphere wise.

yes, because of the nature of the building and the quality of the skies, it actually might work with the Becher aesthetics. I still find that the approach would work with some images better than with others. Color is a layer of information that sometimes is very relevant.

Nevertheless my intention for this series as it evolves is to shoot some of these images with a Cambo technical camera and the digital back. This image, because of the three by three matrix, had difficulties in stitching which would have been a non issue with a technical camera. That should allow me, at least theoretically, to repeat the images using b&w film, like for instance an Ilford Hp5.

100cron 006

All image have to be either manual focused or barrel position focus. I simply can't rely on AF for S system.

45S.

I haven't taken photos for last few months. Had a family walk around Berkeley during past weekend. I got some nice light during the day. I took SL2 and OTUS 55, 006 with 45 and 100S. Again, only want to edit file from S because it is part of experience, part of my feel about the light and time . I remember what I saw (through the optical viewfinder). For SL2 during shooting, I feel like look a picture during shooting that camera generated for me if that makes sense to anyone. This has been my experience for past 10 years or so when I took multiple system on any trip with S. I can't explain but that is really how I feel and that is really why I am still with S system with so many flaws with the system. It is all about trade offs in life. S always took my best family photos as well, nothing close.

Speaking of the Bechers, here's one from yesterday. Apologies because it was not taken with the S. Part of a series I'm working on

I live in Berkeley, and our hills are exceptionally green right now, so your timing was great. Re comparing the S with the SL system, I agree with you, those 006 files are special. But you also have two very unique lenses (45 and 100), that adds to the feel you describe I’m sure.

This week, on vacation (S3, 70 mm). For personal stuff, I usually take the M9, but late last week I was working with the Ph One and the S3 was the backup camera. Really pleased with the definition and the color.
