M240 FW

Rather sadly I suspect the new firmware (if it exists) will just be a lens update and very little else....

Leica HAVE adrressed most of the concerns listed above ...... BUT....

It will be (as I predicted) by shoehorning a version of the new S Maestro II processor into the M240 successor ..... as they have done with the Q.

I would be very surprised if Leica are wasting their time in making any major changes to the M240 (or 246 ..... as they have been developing this camera for some time) firmware.

Sorry, Folks ......  :(

Well, I hope you're wrong - I have been told by a senior person at Wetzlar that they are working on the lock-up issue.  Whether or not they take the opportunity for upgrades (improved start up time), I really don't know.

It would only be a waste of time if the issues are hardware related and as such cannot be fixed on the M24x platform.

Leica runs the risk of being seen as incompetent when it comes to proper implementation of basic firmware. Not only with the current M but with the M9 as well. The very first digital Rebel of 2003? has a faster wake up time than the flagship M.

The M240 is a step backward, and the fact it takes the shot and then throws it away (without any alert) is misleading and totally unacceptable.

As far as I can tell that is exactly what most (non-Leica) cameras do, unless you disable taking shots when no card is present.

The processor is crap..... if it wasn't all of these issues would have been fixed long before now.

The car needs a new engine ......not another tune up and tinkering with what's already under the bonnet ....

They are not incompetent ...... just limited by the original specification .... which was probably decided upon 4-5 years ago ....

Leica HAVE listened to what we have moaned about for the last few years and the Q is proof that these problems will be addressed ...  but not in the M240 or M246

Yes we've been discussing about startup/wakeup time since March 2013 here. An average of about 2 seconds can be achieved with fast 8, 16 & 64GB cards provided the cards are new or formatted with SD Formatter. The only solution to get faster times is to disable the sleep mode, which works fine if one doesn't mind battery drain. Aside from that, Leica did not find any solution to improve the matter in two years so it would be extremely surprising if they find it now. They are working on the next M currently so they have much better things to do IMHO.

Leica cannot go to the Maestro II for the 240 without new firmware.

That is excellent news.

No excuse. ;) The processor may be crap, but there is a lot more they could do in firmware to work around the issues with the performance of the processor, such as allowing a photo to be saved in the buffer while the processor is still checking the SD card. The cameras have 1GB to 2GB of ram on board, put that to greater use.

You are correct, and I find this unacceptable. At least the alert should say "No Card -- Image will be discarded".

  • 2 weeks later...

Finally 2.0.2.5 is there

Improvements:

  • New Menu item “Flash exposure compensation” to adjust flash exposure with the Leica SF 26 flash unit (only active when SF 26 is attached). This new function requires Firmware 1.1 on the SF 26 Flash.
  • Several firmware bugs that caused occasional camera hang up when using Live View or Video function have been fixed.

Interestingly I never had hang ups while using live view, only when using high isos...
