Jennifer Posted June 15, 2015 Share #123 Posted June 15, 2015 From my short play with their demo Q at Leica Mayfair today, I'd have to say that I was very impressed. First impressions are that it's extremely nice camera, small but not too small, beautifully built, very fast AF and practically silent operation. No chance to assess the IQ ................. however, I'm determined to resist this time ............... I must resist...............I must resist. iLeica Posted June 16, 2015 Share #125 Posted June 16, 2015 Do you guys think this will be a good camera for some product photography? I wanted to get an amazing digital camera but don't want an SLR for the main reason that it's so heavy to take on vacations. Would the Leica Q work out for me? I will use it to start shooting product photography for an upstart company that sells clothing.

If you are ok with limiting your images to one focal length it would be fine...but its not ideal to be restricted to a 28mm lens when shooting products. But you should be determining the type of photos you need to shoot then getting a camera that can accomplish what you need rather than choosing a camera first and hoping it will work. Not that you can't get results at 28mm, but in full frame SLR world, I'd probably use a 50mm or 85mm for clothing on models. I don't think you'll be happy with 28mm. bernie.lcf Posted June 16, 2015 Share #129 Posted June 16, 2015 Coming back to the facebook group. A guy called Bryan C has posted a comment about pretty bad corners being extremely soft. It has sparked quite a debate where people have questioned his findings, provided help and i sight and where Bryan was never really able to participate in a meaningful way. Well, this is his last comment that probably explains it all: I haven't see too many full res shots from the camera yet as mine is still on order, however I was made aware of a potential issue regarding corner sharpness even at f/5.6... Here is what DPReview says on the manner:

I will use it to start shooting product photography for an upstart company that sells clothing. Two things come to my mind here: I would not consider taking a camera to my vacation which I'd selected for its capability to do product photography, unless, of course, the product photography is to take place during my vacations. One of the problems with clothing is that you're very likely to get moiré in your pictures. Moiré can be very difficult to get rid of, I think, particularly if it's on the sole subject of interest. There are much better product photography cameras and you need to consider the means of lighting the products as well the camera. Lighting is more important than the camera …consider reading fashion photography books and try and analyse the lighting used. Google 'fashion photography books' and the pics which come up in the search results are all about lighting rather than cameras. dunk

thighslapper Posted June 16, 2015 Share #136 Posted June 16, 2015 Well ..... I did the same in Munich this afternoon ..... but for the first time in a long while walked away from a leica camera without the desire to own it .... Feels plasticky and although snappy and with an excellent evf the 28mm focal length is very limiting .... macro mode useful though ..... If it didn't have Leica stamped on it could have been one of a dozen other far eastern cameras and I would have been none the wiser. Heartened that Leica have finally got electronics and firmware that is speedy enough not to cause exasperation ..... but sad that this camera doesn't instil the slightest urge in me to want and use it ..... UliWer Posted June 16, 2015 Share #138 Posted June 16, 2015 If I needed a new camera, I'd probably buy one. If I wanted a travel camera, I certainly would. When I bought my first Leica, my idea was, just one excellent lens with one excellent camera. This idea lasted a few weeks. In the meantime I have Leica lenses from 18 to 200mm and many of them in many different versions. I was trapped by the idea Leica stood for since 1930. When the Sony RX 1 came, I thought, this would have been my camera had it been on the market before I bought my first Leica. The Q may be an idea for the Leica future, but no sensible offer to those who come from the Leica past.

When I was younger a teacher challenged me to shoot with just one lens for a year. I chose a 35mm lens and spent the next year shooting with only that lens. I learned more in that year about photography than any other time in my life. Today I have pretty much any lens made at my disposal, yet I still enjoying going out with just one lens. 35mm is my favorite fl, and I wish Leica married a 35mm Summilux to this body...but then again since I already own a 35mm Summilux and a MM and M240, I probably never would have bought the Q.
