Why did you get the new Monochrom?

No one reason, other than Leica fixed everything I didn't like about the original MM (low resolution LCD, loud/clattery shutter) and the UI is the same as the M240. I do use the EVF/LV feature of the M240 for macro work and when using my temperamental Noctilux. It'll also be nice to be able to interchange accessories.

I never said that; I said that my photography did not merit the undoubted upgrade from a financial point of view. But a gift horse would not be looked into the mouth, I can guarantee you. (not that it would ever come to pass...)

I ordered an M246 Monochrom so that I can have both a color and B&W camera of the same platform, using EVF/LV, same battery/charger, MF grip for GPS, etc.

 

Same here. I have too many Li-Ion battery types in play and did not want to regress to the poor batteries of the M8/M9/MM platform. The one thing left off the list is superior flash operation.

Hopefully I don't get into trouble for premature posting.  I plan on picking one up for the B&W Video and improved high ISO performance.  My biggest question - when will it be offered in silver chrome?

 

Everyone would get busted for that, since they are shipping on Friday.

Hope to find again all the improvements that I found when switching from the M9 to the M 240 as well as I hope to find the same uniqueness a true B&W camera like my current Monochrom has to offer.

 

I voted for EVF for practical reasons (R lenses) but must admit the current M EVF is "dated" to say the least.

Hi, I haven't been following the M240 as I've been happily using the M9 - but the flash doesn't work well. What is different about the M240 (and presumably the MM 246)?

 

On the M 240, the SF-58 does high-speed sync and generally works much faster. 

 

The other differences are big: live view/EVF for precise framing with wides or focusing legacy lenses, 3-axis digital leveling visible via same, much larger and crisper screen, much faster electronics, much longer battery life, you can key frame line color to the user profile you are on, no crashes. Also video if you are into that. The controls are much better; no thumb-bruising scroll wheel; instead, you get a thumb wheel from whence you can dial-in exposure comp directly.

You specifically said that a new M "would not make you dump the original one"…and when asked if you would therefore own two, you said no because the "present one suits me fine".

 

To me, that's no interest, not financial constraint.

 

But I knew…based on several similar past discussions on other new cameras…that you'd modify your words….and likely your actions.  No worries, you're entitled….and consistent.

Main reason for me:

 

*wanted to get already the old monochrome

*already have a m(240)

*same system when it comes to batteries, grip, evf, etc

*it takes my R-glass

*it made me feel better

Also I'm using wider angle lenses for Architecture and New M246 offers live view which is a great feature for that purpose. In addition, I shoot tethered in the studio and having Multifunction grip on M246 is a plus. My setup for M's: MM CCD + M 50mm APO / M 75 f1.4 and M246 + Noctilux 0.95 / M 28mm f2

I loved my M9M, but the main reason for me upgrading is to go to the better (in my opinion) M240 platform. The original Monochrom seems so clunky after using the M240 (particularly the shutter) and it will mean only having to carry one type of battery and a common charger.

This is my first Leica, and it does exactly what I want. It is accompanied by the APO Summicron 50, and I have a Summilux 35 ASPH FLE on order. That should do me for a while. I tend to be able to restrain GAS, and held off on this until the time was right.

1. Ability to have live view when using wate and noctilux, no need to use frankenfinder.

2. Better rangefinder mechanism for all other lenses

3. Better controls ie thumb wheel etc

4. Quieter shutter, better build quality.

5. No risk of corrosion., only have to take one charger on trips instead of two - cross compatibility with 240.

 

Debating what to do with original MM. Already had sensor replaced once. I will probably keep it as it is still my favorite camera , haven't fully bonded with the 246 yet. But sure enjoying the convenience of the 240 platform.

1:  I do still-life. the focus aid will save me the three extra stops I was using to cover focus shift.

2:  I will see what I'm getting with my favorite 40mm.Summicron. (not too long , not too short, but just right for 'attitude').

3.  I was feeling nervous with only one monochrom body and the threat of a sensor revision (it would be cheating to convert M9 shots to black and white).
