Advertisement Posted March 19, 2015 Posted March 19, 2015 Hi Paulus, Take a look here Leica Super-Elmar 21 + Elmar 24 pros and cons.. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
CheshireCat Posted March 20, 2015 Share #2 Â Posted March 20, 2015 I have both. Both amazing lenses, but I use the 21 much more. They are very similar and you can crop the 21 to 24 with quite good results. Â I am considering selling the 24/3.8 for a fast wide, as I am really missing 3 more stops for subject isolation and low light.
pgk Posted March 20, 2015 Share #3 Â Posted March 20, 2015 I have a 21SE (and a 21SA) and I used to have the 24/2.8 (rather than the 24SE). Its a personal thing, but I found the two focal lengths to be too close and that I tended to opt for the 21 far more, so the 24 went. At these focal lengths I think each user has their own preference and I've known photographers who have been completely satisfied with 24 and who have found 21 just too wide for their taste. In a nutshell some seem to find 21 a tad wide, others 24 a tad short. The pros and cons are simple IMO, its just discovering which camp you sit in that's more problematic
LeicaPassion Posted March 20, 2015 Share #4 Â Posted March 20, 2015 I found that the gap between 21 and 35 was too large so I added a 28. I never feel the need for a 24. As others have written, it depends upon your shooting style.
lct Posted March 20, 2015 Share #5 Â Posted March 20, 2015 I have both lenses as well and find them very close. I use the 24 on my M8.2 mainly as i can still use the OVF with it. I prefer a 28 with OVF or 21 with EVF on the M240.

Are there users who have both and what is your opinion comparing them.  I have a similar problem. I think on buying a 24 or 21 lens. My preferences go for the 21.  The 24mm is very tempting but... it is an exotic focal length, it is too slow, and need as much depth of field as possible...  Anyway, the MTF curves of the 24mm are impressive. Those straight horizontal lines are wonderful, never seen in a lens so wide...

lct Posted March 22, 2015 Share #8 Â Posted March 22, 2015 Well i'm a raw shooter and i don't pixel peep much sorry. All i can say is i get similar results out of C1 v8 in linear mode but you may wish to ask other photogs to be sure about that.
Bill W Posted March 25, 2015 Share #9 Â Posted March 25, 2015 I have both and like them. I had an older 24 and traded it several years ago. I wished I had not of course. I found a REALLY good deal on the 24SE and bought it for less than $2000. It is a small lens if you do not need more speed then it is great.
tom0511 Posted March 25, 2015 Share #10 Â Posted March 25, 2015 I have never used the 24SEM, but the 21 SEM. I have never heard from people not liking the 21SEM, but I have heard from a few which where not 100% happy with 24SEM corners. The 21SEM (at least the one I have) is exceptionally good even wide open. (if you can call 3.4 wide open). But I assume its much more important which focal length you want than the question if the corners are very slightly sharper or not.
mirekti Posted March 25, 2015 Share #11 Â Posted March 25, 2015 I had 21mm SEM and this lens was really remarkable. Everything good people wrote about it on this forum was true, but this was not enough for me. Why? I eventually bought 24mm SE and to my surprise I found it more useful than 21mm as 21mm was too wide for me and my style. I paired it with 35mm FLE on the wide end and those two complement perfectly for what I need them. Â I have a much better control with 24mm, I don't use external VF but guesstimate the frames by using the edges of built in viewfinder as frames. No issues with the corners whatsoever. Â All in all, both lenses are wonderful and you will have to decide based on your preferences in photography. If I were you and own 21mm SEM already I would keep my money in the pocket or find something else. Or you can rent 24mm and see which one you'd like to keep. If you like 24mm more, you could swap your 21mm for 18mm SEM for example.
tobey bilek Posted March 26, 2015 Share #12  Posted March 26, 2015 Both are excellent lenses.  My feeling is use 21,28, 35 or 24.35 combination  Since you are considering a 3.8 24, I assume it will not be for low light. I would recommend filling in a 2.8 28mm ASPH which is a beautiful rendering small light lens.
Leica Frog Posted March 31, 2015 Share #13 Â Posted March 31, 2015 The Leica 21 SEM can be the superb lens in our opinion, so I believe the 24/3.8 SEM should be better by structural logic. However, I prefer the quality of 21 SEM on my M240 because of its wider and faster, that's enough for my decision-making.

Erik Gunst Lund Posted March 31, 2015 Share #15  Posted March 31, 2015 IMHO there is no practical difference in speed between the two lenses, it is purely by design those f stops  1/4 stop scale values: 1.0 1.1 1.2 1.3 1.4 1.5 1.7 1.8 2 2.2 2.4 2.6 2.8 3.1 3.4 3.7 4 4.4 4.8 5.2 5.6 6.2 6.7 7.3 8 8.7 9.5 10 11 12 14 15 16 17 19 21
