I just used my M-A last night with the SF24D flash.  The funny thing is when you use the flash, the M-A almost becomes an auto exposure camera!  Because you just set the aperture and shutter speed once, make sure the aperture matches on the flash, then as long as you are within 20 or so feet, you don't need to check exposure whether it is pitch black or just dim.  The flash reads the light levels and varies its intensity.

Fun!

M-A, CV 50 1.5v2, SF24D, Arista 100, DF96 Monobath.

Huss, interesting so the flash acts like a LM? Is this only applicable to leica flash? Coz i have the fuji flash but doesnt tell me anything apart from setting manually

For many M users, one can "do" M-A things with M6/MP just take out the battery.

I tend to agree of course, having done this before buying M-A.

BUT, not really M-A (or M4, M4-P) experiences, with these nice metered M.

(side note, M5 is outsider here 😉)

I don't bother arguing anymore, just experiment to see it (or not) depending on users.

This is great, some bothered by red LED, some happy to have in VF metering, that is fine.

I miss my M A, i feel more robust than my MP, may be im biased since Ma have less electronic things within, just like when using my M2.. seems problem free

I’m not sure what Fuji flash you have, I have I think the EPX 20(?) that I only use on my Xpro3, but it may only work in TTL (the camera controls the exposure) or manual modes.  The Leica SF24d works in TTL, AE (what I was using with my M-A) and manual modes.

I checked my Fuji flash - it is the EF-X20.  It can only do TTL with a Fuji camera, or manual.  And the manual does not indicate recommended apertures/distance/ISO!  So only useful on a Fuji digicam.

You don't have to use a Leica SF24D to get that auto exposure feature.  There are so many older flashes out there that have it - including stuff from Sunpak, Vivitar 283/285 etc.  Just look on the back of one and if it has an Auto setting (not TTL!), you're good.

Well having nothing better to do, as lazy as I am,

I've done the simulation which took me five minutes.

M-A fire flash at every speed, from B to 1/1000, so if too short the shutter speed (higher than 1/50s), likely only part of frame would be flash illuminated.

The M-A seems to be the orphan child of the recent Leica film bodies as all the fuss is about the new M6.  I just picked up an excellent condition black chrome M-A and love it.  The thought-process of using the Sunny-16 rule is refreshing.  My estimate is pretty similar to my phone light meter.

I had a M3 and a M6 and that didn't stop me from picking up a MA. I eventually sold the M3 since the MA just felt better all told.... The M3 was more chiseled, less refined. And, I could have taken out the battery in the M6, or done the same if I purchased a M7 or MP....all agreed.

But.....as we all know and depending on what you are 'into'.....the intangible aspect of a particular camera/features goes a long ways in how we feel about taking photographs. In my case, while I know I could have just taken out the battery on the M6, it would have still been a M6 and not a M3 or MA. When I shoot with my MA now, it is a true, pure.... non-mechanical body that compliments my mind or what I want out of a camera. I am not cutting corners and pretending I have that (by not putting in the battery), but "I do have that".

Ultimately, when we get to this point in our lives when I can talk myself into that thinking..... I know I have reached the epitome of what a Leica fan-boy is.... or a photographer who lives in a fairly comfortable situation. I am willing to spend the 5K +++ towards a camera that is stripped down to nothing but has everything.  'l’art pour l’art'...

Simply put....my love for the MA, needs no justification. jim

Just got back from a few miles of street photography in Philadelphia… cold day… took about 8 shots. Sunny so I keep at F8 @500 most of day. Really… who needs a meter!

‘nothing like’ Analog and what better way than the simplicity of an MA

You're happy with taking just eight shots on ASA 400 film in bright daylight!? And 'what better way than ... an M-A'?

Wait until you tried a Mamiya 7 ... I love my M-A too, but in the 35-mm-format realm only.

... or why it would effect my 'shot rate' ...

Well, 120 film yields 12 exposures per roll in 6 × 6 cm format, or 10 exposures in 6 × 7 cm format (as with Mamiya 7). So, shooting at high frame rates is difficult in medium format. But if you're shooting a single-figure number of frames per day in good light then that's no argument against medium format, and you'd be able to savour its advantages.

35-mm format is better than medium format in action-brimming or low-light environments ... but those obviously are not your cup of tea. In fact, shooting the Mamiya 7 is as easy, as comfortable, and as fast as shooting the M-A (faster, actually, as it has automatic aperture-priority exposure control) ... but for ten frames only. And the performance of the Mamiya N lenses is totally up to what Leica M lenses can deliver.

There's a reason why the prices of Mamiya 7 bodies and lenses have risen so extremely during the last ... um, four or five years. Glad I already have mine. But then, the M-A's price has risen, too. I got mine for € 3,600 a couple of years ago. Lesson learned: If you're interested in a high-end analog camera then buy it today rather than tomorrow. Because prices are high today but will be higher tomorrow.

Total agreement ...the Mamiya will slow your shot rate!.... I know I have a Rolex (wanna-be) 120 and I don't think I have put it thru a complete roll of film yet and I have had it for 7-8 years! Prices of everything in the camera world has shot up. It is amazing. Glad I have what I have as I am happy and content (for now)....   jim

Hello guys.

Glad to join a great community.  This is my first post here, and I just want to start it by showing my M-A!

That light meter with M-A may look abomination, but I prefer M-A top lettering...

Welcome to the Forum!

If you want something that looks a bit nicer(IMHO) on a Chrome M-A check this light meter (https://hedeco.de) :
