Leica Fanatic Posted August 2, 2014 Share #1 Posted August 2, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) Do you have a preference or does it make no difference. Personally I think I favor the rewind of the M2, as in the short time I've had an M6 I've found that the strap (when carried round the neck or shoulder) turns the film rewind anti-clockwise, thus slackening the film. Not sure if this has any negative effects on film transport?
Advertisement Posted August 2, 2014 Posted August 2, 2014 Hi Leica Fanatic, Take a look here Knob or Lever Rewind ?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
madNbad Posted August 2, 2014 Share #2 Posted August 2, 2014 Knob. Never have to worry about bending the the fold out crank lever and it never catches on anything. Slower by far but sturdy.

Herr Barnack Posted August 2, 2014 Share #6 Posted August 2, 2014 I prefer the lever for its speed and ease of use.. I also prefer the knob for its durability. I have used both but if forced to choose, I would probably choose the lever. I am careful with my cameras and the chance of damage to the lever is minimal - for me. nikau Posted August 3, 2014 Share #9 Posted August 3, 2014 My first M Leica, an M4, had the lever and for years I just assumed it was better than the knob. Now, also owning two "knob" cameras, an MP and an M2-R, I prefer that method of rewinding; I don't even find it that much slower than the lever and as others have suggested it's a stronger, more reliable mechanism. I've had two repair bills for bent lever mechanisms over the years.
aesop Posted August 3, 2014 Share #10 Posted August 3, 2014 ...knob - all day, every day. I own both knob and lever rewind cameras.

You need the Leica clockwise strap 11481333. Steve
BrianUK Posted August 3, 2014 Share #12 Posted August 3, 2014 Knob. The rewind crank on my M4-P got damaged and had to be repaired. As for speed, I hardly ever read of users complaining about knobs on screw Leicas being slow.
Leica Fanatic Posted August 3, 2014 Author Share #13 Posted August 3, 2014 (edited) You need the Leica clockwise strap 11481333. Steve Good idea Steve, I'd forgotten about those. However they're such a pain to fit without Leica's special lefthanded screwdriver 420-7432-116 which is stupidly expensive. pico Posted August 3, 2014 Share #14 Posted August 3, 2014 As for speed, I hardly ever read of users complaining about knobs on screw Leicas being slow. There was quite a market for these.
TomB_tx Posted August 3, 2014 Share #15 Posted August 3, 2014 Curious about all the comments on durability. I've used a lot of cameras with rewind cranks from 1965 and have never had a problem with any of them.
Leica Fanatic Posted August 3, 2014 Author Share #16 Posted August 3, 2014 Lever on my M5! Yes brilliant design. Tucked out of the way AND locks solid when closed. Why didn't they continue such a superb and practical idea?
BrianUK Posted August 3, 2014 Share #17 Posted August 3, 2014 There was quite a market for these. I am aware of the various after-market cranks to fit rewind knobs shown, and I recognise some users find them a useful. Indeed a good friend of mine uses and swears by his for his M2. With regard to screw Leicas, in the article reference is made about the crank being "rare" with just ten being made, which in my book doesn’t equate to being “quite a market”. Is there a demand for after-market cranks to fit screw Leicas?

Is there a demand for after-market cranks to fit screw Leicas? A better question to ask is whether there is big demand for LSM Leicas. I think not, but certainly the outliers here will take the opportunity to mention themselves. .

I think not, but certainly the outliers here will take the opportunity to mention themselves. . I think they have a strong following? Before getting the M2, I seriously considered a Screw Mount. What put me off was the need for an exacting film leader, the separate viewing and focusing windows and the fiddly knob film advance.

Cost. It would add another £30 to your a la carte MP. Pete
