stalker Posted May 9, 2014 Share #1 Posted May 9, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use L1XXX... designation for M9 so i chose M1XX.. for M. As i passed beyond 9999 exposures, the file naming on M returned to M1000001 instead of M1010001. How can i solve the problem. How do you name your files. Echo63 Posted May 9, 2014 Share #3 Posted May 9, 2014 The M allows you to change what the camera calls the files straight out of the camera Mine is currently set to usemy name, BENC followed by numbers Once i have take 9999 frames i will probably change it to BEN1, then BEN2 followed by BEN3 Or by the time i have taken 10,000 frames, i might start a new folder to drop them in, and a new lightroom catalogue

250swb Posted May 9, 2014 Share #6 Posted May 9, 2014 Different folders, each sequentialy numbered, each with a date and subject. Then it doesn't matter what the Leica file numbering is, the folder name or file number sequence can't be repeated. Steve
Bill W Posted May 9, 2014 Share #7 Posted May 9, 2014 Advertisement (gone after registration) I use different folders and depending on the event, a special folder like for Alaska in 2012.
Dougg Posted May 10, 2014 Share #8 Posted May 10, 2014 I change all the filenames to a date-based format: YYMMDD-NNN.DNG made simple by use of a Mac program called Better Finder Rename, which can create a "droplet" with the programmed change. I will start by naming the folder copied from the SD card to something like 140411DG LeicaM240 35Lux, and the droplet copies this name, removes all but the first 6 characters, adds a dash three positions to the left of the .DNG so that it retains the existing sequence number of the file. For this to work right, I Reset the file numbering before formatting the card in the camera. So now all files will sort themselves by date of the last shot on the card, just as I used to do with each roll of film. Commentary on subjects and equipment/technical details for each "roll" are put into a database form on the computer so that I can search back by any part of the record. It can be a bit of a pain to stay so organized, but the benefits make it worthwhile for me.

wda Posted May 10, 2014 Share #10 Posted May 10, 2014 I find it far easier to set up Smart Collections in Lightroom; each filtering out all pictures shot with a specific camera or within a time-frame, or by unique keywords. In fact, I find the filtering tool very useful for finding subsets of almost any subject or technical attribute. There is infinite scope for making editing easier. As LR comes free with many new Leica cameras, most users have access to this versatile software.

Ecar Posted May 14, 2014 Share #14 Posted May 14, 2014 I rename all my files to something more meaningful (e.g., description_place_date_sequential nb) when copying them on my hard drive, then import them in LR.
rafael_macia Posted May 14, 2014 Share #15 Posted May 14, 2014 +1 for "A Better File Rename" I use it to renumber all files shot. Sometimes a similar subject is shot with different cameras. (240/9P ...) Since my master file is numerical, in order to group subjects, I strip them of their camera assigned number, by putting them into temporary folders. Using A Better Finder Rename to give them the new number. Then the next different subject folder I create, begins where the previous folder leaves off. Some outlets like folders separating subjects. Another likes no folders. By using A Better ............application/Mac I am able to organize everything. It takes time but it is worth it. I use LR only to extract metadata I put in via Photoshop. Using "List View" plug in, I create a Microsoft Xcel file which has all captions and keywords in a listing along with a small thumbnail view. I use List View as the final step once the complete take is in numerical order by subject matter.
