Was watching the Daily Show with John Stewart last night and comedian Jeff Garlin came out snapping with a Monochrome. John then complimented him on how cool his camera was!

It put a big smile on my face. :)

Geez - if they ever do a bio-pic of Gov. Chris Christie (or his scandals), I think casting the lead will be easy....! (Would need a little extra lower-body padding, though).

Look forward to seeing the film he produced.

I ran into him maybe a year and a half ago and we talked about the RX1 he was carrying with him at the time. He told me that he also had a Monochrom, which he was selling. It was a month old and he offered it to me for $1,000 off the original price. He said that he didn't like messing with post-production. I'm glad he came around to it, but I wonder if he sold the original camera and bought another one, since I did see it listed on ebay after I had talked to him.

Now many people will want to purchase one. Won't they be supprised when they discover that the monochrome costs $8000 and that it only photographs in black and white.

I don't think there will be a rush on the camera.

Surprised and delighted perhaps?

I would have thought the average person with $8000 to spend on just a camera would be educated, have some knowledge of the arts, can express themselves coherently, and will have seen B&W photographs and film before. As such the language of B&W photography won't be alien to them, or at least they'll know which museum to visit and which books to read. The non-average person with $8000 to spend will be either a pimp or drug dealer, and they only do colour photography so would need the usual M with a 'Lux or Nocti, to suit their working hours.

There does appear to some 'public awareness' of the Monochrom. The other night, my young nephew who is at university, was looking at some prints I'd done on my new Epson 3880.

He asked about my camera and when I told him I had shot the pics with a Monochrom he nearly fell off his chair. Respect! He is not into photography but he said that he and his mates at Uni were well aware of Leicas, and thought the MM was 'awesome'. Perhaps it's all those faux Leica iPhone cases?

Then again, the MM was Number One in Stuff magazine's 'Cool List' in 2012. Not that I read that esteemed journal, you understand.......

My idea of an ideal 100 years of Leica special would be a X3 that looked like a Leica I, had a monochrome APS sensor, mechanical MF ring on the lens, OVF and focus peaking on the LCD.

If Leica don't do this, I hope someone else rides the monochrome wave - perhaps Ricoh might be brave enough to have a GR monochrome special.

It's doing fine. Leica say they thought they would sell about 3500 bodies, but the demand has been three times that.

A shame none of the video searches and article searches I did allow Australia to view the clip - its all region locked.

Just have to twiddle my fingers until someone posts it to Youtube

In my view it just seemed like a paid for product placement to me. Particularly when the host discretely moved out the Monochrom camera from behind the mug on the table, while speaking about something else -- so that the video camera could get a better view. Call me cynical...

I think he was more concerned about it falling off the desk. I've never heard of The Daily Show doing product placement, unless Arby's is running some sort of reverse-marketing campaign.

Definitely on YouTube now. The Daily Show with Jon Stewart 01/27/14 Jeff Garlin - YouTube

Its a brief encounter and not the focus of the show.

Enjoy.

Not surprised he was complimented. I'm often complimented when people spot mine hanging from my shoulder. They just like the way it looks!

Me, I'm happy with it's classic look but more importantly, I'm happy with what it produces. It was a sacrifice for me to purchase it, but I have no regrets!
