Advertisement Posted December 25, 2013 Posted December 25, 2013 Hi bephoto, Take a look here A BIG Thumbs Up to Tim Isaac. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest redge Posted December 25, 2013 Share #2 Posted December 25, 2013 What's involved in removing this to use the electronic viewfinder? Does it just slide out? And, in use, how much pressure does it put on the hot shoe?
bephoto Posted December 25, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted December 25, 2013 u just slide it out. no screws no nothing, it has a plastic part on the bottom that keeps the contacts weather sealed
lct Posted December 25, 2013 Share #4 Posted December 25, 2013 Just slides out. Did it a dozen times w/o any play so far. Not sure if it will remain so very long though as it loses a bit of paint each time. I'd rather give up the EVF than the Thumbs Up anyway as the latter's become indispensable for me. jaapv Posted December 26, 2013 Share #5 Posted December 26, 2013 Does the inside have a gasket for weather sealing?

Thanks, very helpful. Given my priorities, I won't be buying one of these, but I can see how some people would find it very attractive. For reasons unrelated to grip, I am probably headed for the multi-function hand grip, which did improve stability, when I tried it, but at the price (albeit pretty minor) of bulk. But I'm just using standard Leica 35mm, 50mm, 90mm and 135mm lenses, and stability is not a big issue with any of these.
lct Posted December 26, 2013 Share #7 Posted December 26, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Does the inside have a gasket for weather sealing? Not sure if i can call it a gasket but the Thumbs Up has a silicon rubber insert that extends across the full width of its back and covers the socket for EVF. lenticularis Posted December 26, 2013 Share #8 Posted December 26, 2013 There is another Thumbs Up model that has a parallel fitting to enable use of a finder. I have one of these and the original also, but for sheer handling enjoyment, I find a quality leather halfcase gives me that. I use a Luigi (Leicatime) case and have bought all of these things 2nd hand. Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk
dugby Posted December 26, 2013 Share #9 Posted December 26, 2013 I've had some people mistake the ThumbsUp as a film advance lever....... so who am I to try to correct their mistakes.......
mirekti Posted December 26, 2013 Share #10 Posted December 26, 2013 There is another Thumbs Up model that has a parallel fitting to enable use of a finder. Could you show an example, please?

Not sure if it will remain so very long though as it loses a bit of paint each time. Isn't this a problem? if this gadget compromises the hot shoe (which I very much doubt was designed to absorb this kind of lateral pressure), surely it will knock $1-2K off the resale value of the camera. At that point, one might just as well buy the hand grip, or multi-function hand grip, which do the same thing (in the case of the multi-function grip more), don't compromise the hot shoe and have re-sale value. No?
mirekti Posted December 26, 2013 Share #13 Posted December 26, 2013 I have a black version for mine, but I won't give him thumbs up as he will come up with the version that has a cold shoe (or it might even support a flash trigger) for optical viewfinder too. And this was the I really wanted.

No? Not for me at least. I've been using three Thumbs Ups with my M8.2 and M240. The first one for the M8.2 had no rubber insert and began to develop a bit of play but the other ones, with insert, are perfect so far. The hotshoes of both cameras have no play at all fortunately otherwise i would not keep what you call a gadget and became for me an essential part of the cameras. Handgrips, thanks no thanks i don't hold my Ms like DSLRs. The Thumbs Up give me the feeling to hold a (better) M3 double stroke or Epson R-D1 whose advance levers play a role in the ergonomics of the cameras. YMMV. chris_tribble Posted December 26, 2013 Share #17 Posted December 26, 2013 Interesting might get one!! Beware that the thumbs up can get stuck in a camera bag or equivalent. They're nice bits of engineering, but for me, snagging on things outweighed the benefit - and frankly, on the M 240 I don't see the point...
jip Posted December 26, 2013 Share #18 Posted December 26, 2013 Yes I must say the M240 handles allot better over the previous M8/9 but with bigger lenses it might be nice(?)
Ecar Posted December 26, 2013 Share #19 Posted December 26, 2013 I had TU's on M8/M9 (and now on the MM). But I find that the M240 is easier to handle (maybe due to the thumb rest?) and I use the EVF much more frequently, particularly with old lenses, than I thought I would. farnz Posted December 26, 2013 Share #20 Posted December 26, 2013 I use a strip of anti-slip tape on the rear of the thumbwheel housing and that makes all the difference I need so I won't be investing in a Thumbs-up. Besides, I often use R lenses with my M and it would be irritating to get used to the Thumbs-Up and then be without it to make way for the EVF for R and other non-RF coupled lenses. Pete.
