So, we can characterize your post as from someone with no Leica issues who just worries.

There is no merit to just worrying in public if your product is okay.

Into the bin ya go.

Uh, no issues? He sent his camera in on Dec 2 and has been given no idea when he'll get it back.

I would think that Leica wouldn't give a definite date unless they know. The sensors are made in batches, the next batch will be waiting delivery. It isn't like a light bulb that fails and you can go to the local shop and probably find one in stock. In the meantime the 'disgusted from Tunbridge Wells' poster has already jumped ship to fresh pastures, so that avenue of whining is now academic, nobody cares.

Well thank you for putting me in the bin but you seem to be one of the guys who read the last post and react to that. If you bothered to read a few more older posts you would have realized that my camera is in repair with expected turn over of 4-6 months.

Now it's your turn to the bin ;)

Thank you for your friendly post. Well I didn't technically jump ship because I still own an M9 which is depreciating in price by the day while I don't technically have it. Once I jump ship, believe me I will never be back on this forum with the likes of you and pico.

I can hardly believe the venomous posts from pico and 250swb. Do you two have shares in Leica, or some other reason for the rudeness and failure to read the detail of Edward's experience?

I refer you to GetDPI for pointers in how to have reasonable and polite debate.

Well, implicit in their so-called "lifetime camera" promise of support "for at least ten years, etc etc etc" is the idea that Leica will stock vital parts, such as sensors. If not, then their word is only as good as that of their suppliers, and it is obvious from the length of the repair periods quoted in this thread, as from the fact that Leica claims not to know when it will have new sensors, that someone has not kept to their word!

Where's that trash can now?

Clearly you are not a happy camper, but I wonder about the facts.

First, I don't see the relevance of your CV lenses. Just not connected, if you are debating Leica.

Second, your lenses 'sat' in Melbourne for, how many weeks. You seem unsure. What was/is the problem? Was it being dealt with during the 3 or was it 4 weeks? Or was it less, or more. Did the Melbourne service department attempt to do the repair or were your cameras just sitting around? Did you get any feedback from Melbourne about what could or could not be done here?

A lot of intangibles in your rant. Maybe with good reason, but you do really need to support such comments with factual information. this is the stuff that incites bad vibes about Leica service. OTOH, if it is warranted, then support the fact with evidence.

I'm not known as a liar. Nor was that a rant. Just my true experience with Leica in Australia.

I'm unsure because I really don't exactly know. I could give you the date I dropped the equipment in for repair, driving it to the store personally. I could give you the date nearly four weeks later where "I" chased them, via the retailer. Not once in this saga has anyone called me. I do the chasing, not the other way around. So I'm not getting fast reliable information from Australia. I'm getting nothing. And I've been without both my tele options for two months.

The lenses (90mm Summarit and 135 APO) went in for adjustment as they were wrongly calibrated, from new. In addition the 135 was to have a 6 bit code update. I was told that both operations were able to be performed in Australia. When I called a month later the retailer called me back after a couple of days and told me that the lenses could not be recalibrated in Australia and would need to go to Solms. I doubt it took 4 weeks to work that out. My assumption is they sat on a shelf for some time first. It was also that they were "sending" them not that they had "sent" them. It's a reasonable assumption to say they hadn't gone anywhere at that point.

The M9 went in for a rangefinder calibration. Who knows what's going on there. I don't know where it is. I'm surmising that it's gone to Solms with the lenses. Even then 9 weeks seems a long time for a calibration. Furthermore there are "issues" as to whether it's under warranty. However that's another story and I have yet to decide how much hassle I wish to go through on that one.

My main issue is that there is no communication. Just me chasing them, constantly. Next time (if I keep any of it) I'll absorb the cost of direct shipment to Germany rather than go through Melbourne.

As four the CV reference. Right now they're all I've got to use with my other M9. And they, although many times cheaper, all seemed to come out of the box accurately calibrated. Not the case for the *rigourously tested* Leica lenses. The only repair issue I've had with a CV lens (out of warranty) came with a phone update and a decent turn around time. It just shows that spending a lot of money doesn't guarantee good service and spending a little doesn't mean poor service.

Gordon, I read your multiple concerns. Can I suggest you PM me and we exchange phone numbers. I reckon I can help sort some of this out, but not on the forum. As it happens, I will be at Camera Clinic tomorrow and am willing to ask a few questions on your behalf. They do take notice of me.

Hope this may help.

Gordon,

Ive had good experiences with Camera Clinic as well. Id take up the suggestion by Erl and exchange details because your experience sounds out of character.

Regards

Thanks Erl. At the moment I have some significant family issues to attend to. In the grand scene of things a camera repair is a first world problem and one that can (and will have to) wait for a couple more weeks. I'm only browsing forums to take my mind off truly important stuff at the moment.

Greatly appreciate the offer though. I may take you up on it at a later date.

Gordon, you are very welcome. I too am enduring several family issues and I know how that can intrude on nearly everything. My issues hopefully have a good conclusion, eventually. I hope yours do too.

Any time in the future I am happy to assist if I can.

These spots appeared on my M9 after wet cleaning the sensor....

I contacted Leica representative here in Greece and Solms with files attached. I got the following answer “camera seems to have a sensor board problem”. They recommended I should send it at the end of February because they are moving.... No answer about cost etc.. camera is out of warranty. Any ideas of what this may be?

For all their failings, Leica seem to have a very generous warranty policy. It may take a phone call to Solms to elicit it, however. It seems to depend on who handles the original return. I think the main problem now for both the M8 and M9 is going to be lack of spare parts. I very much doubt if anyone will be using any of my digital Leicas 60 to 70+ years after they were made, like I do with my LTM Leicas. A significant number of DMR’s and M8’s are now paperweights due to lack of spares.

I feel it warrants mentioning that I have just returned fro camera Clinic (Melb. Aust.) and whilst there, for another matter, they examined and adjusted one of my lenses while I waited, no charge.

In the past they have successfully adjusted the RF on my M9 that Solms failed to do correctly. They also corrected the back focus of my Noctilux that Solms failed to do properly. I could go on, but suffice to say, local service for Leica gear here is excellent and speedy.

Regarding my previous posts, I received an email from "Ursula" by Leica Solms that tells me that the repair of my M9P will probably be tomorrow and the camera will be returned to me as soon as possible. (I had sent my Leica on 28.11.2013 in Solms for sensor replacement)

I hope everything will turn out for the best.
