What do you want in the next digital M?

What I want from a new M... Well I probably won't pick one up. I'm happy with my 240. Well. Unless maybe I sold my 240 with minimal loss, and knew in advance the new rig would give me similar/better results.

Firmware wise...

I want to be able to reconfigure that Movie button. I get hat some people shoot video. I've worked with great videographers. I am NOT one. I shoot stills, that button needs to go.

I think there are only a fewa improvements I'd make on the 240 for a new camera. Besides the obvious... Give us an even better sensor or whatnot.

1. That buffer needs to be faster. I haven't missed a shot yet because I don't machine gun my shots but I still worry about it.

2. Start up time. Not an issue for me usually because I leave it out of the bag and on when I'm on location and/or working. Still. Sometimes I pull the bloody thing out of the bag and want to take a shot right away.

3. Weather sealed lenses. For rough work. I recently got my hands on a Pentax K50 (not mine, just testing) and he sealing is incredible. Also the sealing reduces the shutter noise significantly. Which would make my M virtually silent.

4. Black dot/top script. The red dot sometimes ellicits a genuinely great response. But I'm young and handsome *cough sputter cough*. Elliciting a good response isn't the problem. It's eliciting no response. ;)

5. Either (or both): a Better thumb grip or a flash sync portwithout the MF grip. I want to be able to use my PWs with a thumbs up or evf on.

1: Bodysize of the M9

2: Looks of the M9P including a smaller screen at the back

3: No video

4: Shutter of the M240

5: Image quality of the M9 (low iso's)

6: Image quality of the M240 (high iso's)

So basicly a M9P with new shutter and better high ISO's.

3: No video

As a longtime user of M3 and M6 cameras who passed on the M8 and M9, video was one of the principal reasons why I bought the M240.

While I have no problem with the idea of giving owners a choice about the function of the video button, I am at a loss to understand why some people want Leica to remove video capability altogether. I can't think of a better way to kill the camera.

I am not only a supporter of the video capability, but can see important improvements, in order: better compensation for rolling shutter (a characteristic inherent in CMOS sensors), improved video focusing, improved resolution, HDMI out and support for Time Code.

Cheers

At the very least, I want to be liberated from the Italian Flag Syndrome that comes with using my 35 Summicron ASPH and 24 Elmar ASPH. Post-processing shouldn't be part of the solution. The issue needs to be fixed in camera. If the next M doesn't rid itself of this problem, and there are good alternative cameras and systems available in a year or two, I will be moving on from Leica to something new I am afraid.

Too bad they wrapped a ridiculous body around it.

An excellent sensor that is amazing for low light work and a autofocus system that can't focus at all in low light. Makes sense!

How would it kill the camera? There was no video in every M camera from the M3 till the M9. Cutting out video is just stepping back to the original concept like they did with the M6 coming from the M5.

I really don't understand why a M camera should be a mixture of everything next to the range finder (R solution, mirrorless, videocamera) when there are so many (better) alternatives out there for all those extra's. Just let it be the one thing it does best, being a rangefinder.

I do understand - Leica does want to sell the cameras to a wider public than the few old Luddites that want a basic rangefinder camera. ;)

I would not have upgraded from the M9 if the M did not have R lens capability. Video is something I hardly use, but it does not bother me either, as nobody is forcing me to press the Video button...

I pressed it twice...unintentionally both times...

Did it intentionally a couple of times in seven months  including yesterday evening in front of the Xmas tree and i'm quite happy that what is for me the best rangefinder ever made is able to do that for this old still shooter. Congrats Leica it's the way to follow and merry Christmas to you and all LUF members around the world. :)

I would go for an APS EVIL 16 to 20 Mp camera with M mount in a flash, though. It would be less elaborate than my M and less troublesome than the A7 for my R lenses. And a good backup for my M too.

We are maybe more likely to see a Leica micro 4/3 camera based on the Panasonic GX7.

Some 'Leica' lenses have already been announced :

Panasonic announces Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm F1.2 (again): Digital Photography Review

Panasonic adds Leica 15mm F1.7 lens to Micro Four Thirds stable: Digital Photography Review

There rate only 2 things I would like to see in the next M, which should have been in the current issue. Auto sensor clean (this has been around for over 5 years) and color profiles that are actually not sub par. The current camera is great with only those 2 elements lacking.

  • 2 weeks later...

- dimensions, strength and weight like the analog M's (2/3/4/6/7/MP)

- manual shutter lever -> using new high tech material for cloth shutter maybe to realize faster shutter speeds than 1/1000sec ; if not possible: at least shutter of M240

- dedicated ASA/ISO wheel on the back for setting the sensitivity

- no LCD / back display (no need for menu or WB settings, file/img size, profiles ... overrated and unnecessary - respectively e.g. WB/size/file format could be changed later by using RAW converter software)

- RAW is the only file format

- no replay functionality at all

- more weather resistant body than the M240

- battery status LED in the finder

- no auto mode -> no exposure compensation available or necessary

Agree 100%

Leica should have developed the M9 range instead and that is what I would wish to see in a future Leica digital rangefinder camera.

NO video No EVF NO Liveview in other words a proper rangefinder and no pandering to me too production.

Why dont you buy a M7 with films ?

I (and many of us) want to use M lenses on a body FF with EVF and without rangefinder

If it doesn't come from Leica it will come from Sony/Zeiss and Leica will loose a lot of money

I never use video but see no harm having the function available.

It is a free, other than the cost of the switch, by-product of having a CMOS sensor.

Do not like it? Then do not use it. Period.

Merry Xmas!

+1

Well I'm away on a family holiday and doing a fair bit of photography.

For the first time I shot some video. Nothing fancy - just a bit of the family.

I stopped shooting video years ago as I wouldn't go out with both a still and video camera, and I would never compromise the former for the latter (well I did it once and regretted it ). I'm reasonably good at holding the camera still and panning slowly so it's OK to watch even for me, and frankly the family couldn't care even if it is jumpy at times.

I have never to date accidentally activated the video button on the top deck of the M.

If you don't want to use video then don't but I don't understand how anyone thinks the option of video otherwise compromises the camera. My only complaint is that I would like the option of reprogramming the buttons. I don't use video enough to justify a permanently dedicated button and could think of other uses for it.

So I don't plan on becoming a videographer, but being able to shoot some video occasionally is very convenient.

You ask your kids whether they would prefer to look at boring old family photographs or a family video :).
