I wish I understood how DXO's measurements apply to my shooting. I assume DXO has a standardized testing methods so the results within the test parameters have comparative value. I just dunno what the results mean as far as shooting is concerned. To mean they are abstract with little use to me, and the knowledge that some sensors perform better than others and the results are carefully quantified.

You need to read the FAQ they provide to understand the methods and rankings, but it's all there. Personally I don't pixel peep this deep. I do see a very true correlation between what they say is "better" and the improvements I notice when shooting with a camera that is "better" than my last one, if you see what I mean. I thereof see it as a weather vane, and the "how much better" is the size of the jump, numerically.

The eye tracking (identification) auto focus displayed here;

Nice. Not for Leica-man obviously.

Well, the Olympus OM-D E-M1 has a similar feature. Quoting from its user manual:

"

Face Priority Off. Face priority off.

Face Priority On. Face priority on.

Face & Eye Priority. On The autofocus system selects the pupil of the eye closest to the camera for face-priority AF.

Face & R. Eye Priority On. The autofocus system selects the pupil of the eye on the right for face-priority AF.

Face & L. Eye Priority On. The autofocus system selects the pupil of the eye on the left for face-priority AF.

"

Similar to the A7R the E-M1 also tries to correct for diffraction effects - although imperfectly.

But, of course only for Olympus lenses.

I don't have a link, but I read that most major camera manufacturers have also 'downjusted' their forecasts. It's going to take innovation not small evolution to come out on top. Just what Sony is doing. The 'everyone wants a DSLR' bubble has been burst by m4/3 cameras, which in turn may be burst by FF Mirrorless...

Fascinating times.

The same as everyone dosn't want a DSLR shrunk down in size to look like a warthog (Nikon Df) :D

I currently do not own anything wider than a 28mm cron and elmarit so i am not too worried about use of those on the A7r. Whilst i do look forward to using my 50mm lux and nocti and 75mm cron on the A7r, i will not be able to resist the 35mm zeiss FE lens as my autofocus take everywhere lense. :)

Yup, I've ordered the 35 FE, and will compare ease of use vs IQ with the M35 Cron. Results, both in use and printed image will determine which lens stays and which goes, if any. Same with the 55FE and my 50Lux, and eventually the 85FE and my 75 cron.

I may follow in the steps once i have the camera. The 55FE from what i have seen so far delivers beautifully and 85mm was prior to Leica my favourite focal length. I did think that i might get the Zeiss A 85mm and may still do as an interim while i wait for the 85FE to be released.

But, i think i will hang onto my series 2 noctilux as i do not think i would wish to repurchase one given their price increase.

You may wish to have a look at the WA thread for Fredmiranda.com from about here down regarding particularly the Leica C 40mm f2 lens (and expected for the Minolta 40mm f2 M-Rokkor lens) on the Sony A7r:

A7/A7r - performance with WA RF lenses - FM Forums

Maybe someone can comment regarding the performance on the M240 with this lens as well as regarding the performance in the extreme corners.

Rich

Rich-After I got my MM, I did a test of about ten 50mm lenses and also included the 40/2 C in the test. I posted the results here somewhere. Mop top three in the results were: APO50 cron 2, Nocti50 f1, and the 40 cron/2. For $500-600 it's a keeper.

I don't use much my Summicrons 40/2 on the M240 as the framelines of the latter don't match well its field of view. Now the 40/2 is a sharp lens indeed from f/4 to f/11 but it is soft in the corners at f/2 and still so at f/2.8 i'm afraid. For better performance in the corners i would choose a 50/1.4 asph, a 35/1.4 asph or a 35/2 asph preferably.

Hi,

after a longer research I decided to order the camera directly at songs website.

Happy with the promised delivery date. Curious as always didn't stop my investigations I found this disappointing video.

Sorry, the video review is great but the shutter sound of the new sony alpha 7r is really awful and extremely noisy.

Instantly I cancelled my order... Let's see what happens. Hope Sony will cancel my order without any problems... :o

Here is the link to the video:

The sound you hear at 5:20

Cheers

The shutter isn't really that bad. I don't think that it is any noisier than any of my R cameras. Also, from what others have said it is not that much louder than an M240, but I can not recall.

The London Camera Exchange has a small local show in Lincoln (UK) tomorrow (6 November), which I go to most years. According to the website both the A7 and the Nikon Df will be there.

Unfortunately I dont have an M to Nex adater to try my M lenses, but it will be good to have a look.

Not much louder than an M9 i believe but i may be wrong. The M240's quietness is out of reach most probably.

You are probably right with regards the M240 versus a7r. However, not one camera of late can come close to the RX-1 with its leaf shutter. The only way I know my wife is taking a shoot of me is to look at the lens to see if it closes and opens.

It would be good to get some feedback on this and also if anyone knows of any other venues where the A7r is being made available in UK :)

They had 2 A7s and an A7R there, all seemed to be 'finished' cameras, working fully, but the only lenses were a pair of the cheaper zoom. I was very impressed with the cameras, smaller than I thought, very solid although not in the Leica league. The front and rear control wheels work the same way as my Nikons do so that seemed familiar, and shutter speeds were displayed on the rear lcd which might take a bit of getting used to. Magnified view for manual focusing was ok even with the zoom lens, which didn't feel like 'fly by wire', perfectly possible, although I don't know why anyone would bother doing mf with such a lens, I found the red edge focus peaking distracting and unhelpful, maybe it would grow on me with experience.

The salesman said he had tried a couple of Leica lenses on them, on a Novoflex adapter, 'and both 35 and 21 were perfect' it was busy and I didn't press him as to which 35 and 21 he had tried, it will be interesting to see what tests by experienced people bring up.

Certainly a step in the right direction, but, for me, good performance with M mount lenses will tell whether it's of interest, I have no desire to get into another system, I have plenty of M and Nikon mount lenses already, and the M mount ones are 'the best' IMHO.

Gerry

PS there was no sign of the Nikon Df, 'there are only two in the country and they are in London being used for reviews by magazines etc.' They had the usual table full of large, heavy and expensive zoom 'phallic symbols'

Thanks for the feedback, ignoring the bit about the 21mm WA, which is probably best :).. interesting what you note about the navigation wheels. I am going forward with the A7r on the basis that i can use my Leica lenses and get excellent results and also learn and live with the increased controls over my M8.
