A Nikon guy comments on a Sony product ... interesting strategy ... one I intuitively distrust.

This is a new camera that signals a transition many have been clamoring for ... replace the DSLR brick with a small easy to take with and carry autofocus camera that delivers a FF high meg look and feel. This camera is 5" wide ... my right shoulder is celebrating as I write this!

Will it be perfect? What revolutionary camera has been in its first iteration? This is a new FF E mount ... so new dedicated lenses will be few and far between for a while. Sounds Leica S2 like, to me.

Meanwhile, those with APSc sized E mount lenses can get their 16 meg files from it. Sony SLT owners like me can adapt their better FF Zeiss AF lenses ... like my little ZA 24/2. Despite the small size of the camera, I will relish mounting my ZA135/1.8 monster on it and shooting @ 36 meg! (my shoulder just snorted its' disapproval, but I assured it that the rig will be on a mono-pod the few times I do that).

Oh, and if there is even a glimmer of hope that I can use my Leica M50/0.95 or M75/2AA on it, all the better. I suspect I will, and I've learned to use focus peaking on my 24 meg FF A99 to extremely good effect (some of these features actually take a little practice to get good at).

This is no replacement for a rangefinder. My MM isn't worried in the least. I'd guess M9 and M240 owners aren't sweating either. I also think Sony doesn't even acknowledge Leica in their marketing meetings, and like wise Leica about Sony.

This IS the first of the new breed that signals a challenge to the inbred DSLR form factor which is getting close maxing out what can be done with in its present bloated form. That Sony did it first cheeses off the competition ... it is as simple as that.

What follows over the next few years will no doubt be very interesting.

- Marc

Lots of picture with new native lenses.

And hot damn that thing's light!

On both my 35 and 50(55) focal length comparisons it's 2/3rds of the weight of my M system. Remains to be seen what the package size is with lenses mounted when comparing the two. It's easy to compare cigarette box vs match box sizes online, not so easy when there's protrusions, bumps, eyepieces, grips etc....

edit - bracing myself for the obvious "too light" "cheap plastic" type come backs. So, before then - it's only a statistical observation.

After reading this long and interesting thread I have posted some subjective comments in my article Leica Lenses on Sony's A7: The Big Controversy. Let me know, as I am sure you will, if the facts are wrong. The opinions I have copyrighted:D

Mike

Nicely written Mike. I like the ending with regards to either quilting or digital photography. I am over 60 and took up photography about 45 years ago but I cannot remember why. :D

The 36MP A7 with the 35/F2.8 looks like a damn fine piece of kit. No optical viewfinder of course (or shutter speed dial:() but the whole kit looks like tremendous value. If I didn't already have a camera that I liked I'd probably be putting in an order for this. With a 30 day money back option there's nothing really to lose.

Should they really want this, what is to stop people from using an optical viewfinder on it for wide lenses?

Interesting. I see individual detent 1/3 stop Aperture, Shutter and ISO dials. Whereas on the M240 I miss an ISO dial.

Not saying wrong or right but the three dials is really appealing to me. Assuming they're not an ergonomic failure.

Yes, I'd already thought of that possibility and have a 35mm CV accessory finder that I haven't used since I owned an RD-1. That said, I suspect that it's probably better to just use the Sony camera the way it was designed.

Of course the Sony 50 1.8 OSS E Mount Lens can be used cropped on the A7/R.

However by removing a plastic piece in the back of the lens (held by 3 screws) it might function as an FE lens.

Similarly for the Sony Zeiss 24mm 1.8 E Mount Lens.

I have those two lenses already.

So in light of that, which of the 3 FE lenses 24-70, 35, 55 would be most useful to get first?

Decisions, decisions, decisions...:D

Isn't there a Zeiss AF 85/1.4 for the Sony DSLR? I assume it will also AF on the A7 but I could be wrong on both points.

Yes, there are two adapters for ZA lenses, one with SLT and PDAF, and one simpler design that uses the camera's own AF system.
