pgk Posted September 17, 2013 Share #23 Posted September 17, 2013 I never had any freezing issues with the M9, locks, crashes or corrupt cards. But I never used continuous shooting, never used sandisk and never delete photos on the camera .................... Neither have I and I do everything you list AND run the battery down until the camera stops working...... But back on topic; the title of the tread got me. Is it the cameras or the owners the OP is referring to as having issues?

Paulus Posted September 17, 2013 Share #25 Posted September 17, 2013 I shouldn't have posted here. M is on its way to Solms with probable sensor failure.... You mean the totally repaired Leica after that terrible crash? Didn't they replace the sensor?

HV25 Posted September 17, 2013 Author Share #29 Posted September 17, 2013 Neither have I and I do everything you list AND run the battery down until the camera stops working...... But back on topic; the title of the tread got me. Is it the cameras or the owners the OP is referring to as having issues? Hahaha ... or both ? In all seriousness It seems to me that the camera is showing some issues in some specific situations that the vast majority of users may not experience. I for one haven't considered using LV - so no issues with that .-). It's good and reassuring to hear that quite a few enjoy the M240 and experience no problems. I certainly do and think my D800e will be up for sale soon .

Guest Gilgamesh Posted September 18, 2013 Share #31 Posted September 18, 2013 Most issues can we worked around. Getting hold of one, can't. The single biggest issue for me is the over exposure you typically get when you QUICKLY (re)activate the camera and it thinks about an exposure for seconds then gives you something that has absolutely NO relevance to the M or A setting. I have lost some prize winning shots of late and am never impressed with this. Maybe you're not yet asking enough of the beast? Quick fire, quick response, from the hip or press-type scenarios and it falls flat on its face most every time. That said, it goes everywhere with me and I have rarely taken the f1.4 50mm lens off. It's a shooting discipline I had much admired in others, and now I am too living the life.
Guest Gilgamesh Posted September 18, 2013 Share #32 Posted September 18, 2013 How do the M240 colour files, rendered out as b&w compare, like-for-like with the MM?
jaapv Posted September 18, 2013 Share #33 Posted September 18, 2013 I don't know. Solms will look at the camera tomorrow - it suddenly started producing concentric magenta circles. Ok. The problem was not the sensor; it was the LCD or associated electronics. The camera will have to go to QC first as it was a first occurrence and will be returned to me ASAP with-once again a new backside
Wail Posted September 18, 2013 Share #34 Posted September 18, 2013 People generally only post in equipment forums to complain! Most people are getting on taking pictures. Saying that, I am sure that the issues here are genuine but they probably only surface when using the camera in a particular way I totally agree with all you've said; the abundance of issues we see online is purely due to unsatisfied users coming online seeking possible solutions. Those happy and issue-free just get on by using their equipment. I never had any freezing issues with the M9, locks, crashes or corrupt cards. But I never used continuous shooting, never used sandisk and never delete photos on the camera .................... If you don't mind me asking ... By "continuous shooting" are you referring to the "C" setting on the on switch? Why is it you never use Sandisk, and what brand do you use? Do you just delete the files on your computer? Don't you ever format in-camera? I ask since, after over a year of trouble free usage, I have had one corrupt SD when used with a specific battery. All other SD and battery combinations seem OK; but this was enough to give me a huge turn off as I don't know when I may face another corrupt issue that may restrict my shooting for that outing. Sorry to hijack the thread, but as you've mentioned your M9 experience here, and I am keen on hearing about M users (mine is sat waiting for me at the Leica Store Mayfair for me to collect). Thanks for any feedback.
colonel Posted September 18, 2013 Share #35 Posted September 18, 2013 If you don't mind me asking ... By "continuous shooting" are you referring to the "C" setting on the on switch? Why is it you never use Sandisk, and what brand do you use? Do you just delete the files on your computer? Don't you ever format in-camera? . hi there welcome to the forum (14 posts - I hope there are many more!) I have used C, but I never keep my finger down taking multiple pictures. Just one or two. I almost always use S. Again other folk report no problem with C, particularly with the latest firmwares. I first heard there were problems with sandisk cards (which should now have been eliminated due to firmware updates) before I purchased an M9 many years ago. Since then I use mostly Samsung on the M8 and M9 and have found them to be 100% reliable (so far). I have used others occasionally, e.g. PNY, Mobymemory own brand, etc. but mostly Samsung. Interestingly I think the construction quality of Samsung ones are also better but I will leave that up to others to judge I always format in camera, but tend not to delete individual photos, and tend to format only when the card is near full. This is me being superstitious and not general practice. Basically flash/static memory cells eventually die after certain numbers of writes (I think it is a probability thing as well as a life space issue). Manufacturers today tell us that flash memory has millions of times of write life and therefore not to worry about it but I still do. I have had cards fail in other cameras (not just Leica) but totally fail, i.e. they can not be used or formatted in any device. There is an area of the SD card which is erased every time you format called the FAT (file allocation table). It is also written to everytime you add or delete a file. I am just trying to minimize its usage. Also by not deleting files until the card is near full I am making use of most of the recordable cells on the card. If you format everytime you use the card, you are using the same cells to write the photos over and over again. So I tend to use 32gb Samsung cards in the Leica M9, and 64gb Sandisk extreme or Samsung cards in the X-Vario, Fuji and others Not sure if that is helpful but just IMHO Enjoy your camera! best rgds
luigi bertolotti Posted September 18, 2013 Share #36 Posted September 18, 2013 How many M's have been produced? roughly : ca. 50/day for ca. 30 workweeks of 5 days... 6000 to 8000 seems a reasonable figure to me. Another different source : my dealer told me (3 days ago), that Leica spoke to him of "around 200 M" in Italy, and he also had, on a meeting, the info that Italy made (2011 and 2012) around 4-4,5% of the M market... vague data... but pointing to not too different figures. Mine also ended up in QA/QC with a shutter problem. Shutter was replaced with a very rapid turn around . Infant mortality I guess. Bob.
lct Posted September 19, 2013 Share #38 Posted September 19, 2013 No problem for me either aside from the slow refresh rate and the too long startup, wakeup and blackout times but those congenital issues will never be fixed i'm afraid so it's not tomorrow that i'll get rid of my earlier yet faster cameras. mmx_2 Posted September 19, 2013 Share #40 Posted September 19, 2013 No major issues here either, past 2000 shots today (since July). I've had two lock ups but that was before I bought a new (faster) memory card. I was sceptic at first but I'm loving it more for every day that goes and I have not touched my M8 since I got the M. It is a very good camera indeed!
