My 75mm is sitting lonely...

Not sure after shooting today that my 75 'cron is going to get much use. I just haven't used it for ages and not sure my eyes see that FL too well.

I would like your comments please on either:

Trading it in for a 50 'lux

Or

Trading it in as well as the 21SE

For the 16-18-21 WATE.

I have the 35 'lux and the 12mm CV

What say you all?

Having a 50 lux was a big part of the reason I ditched the 75 lux, and haven't bought the 75 cron. I'm still a bit tempted, but it just feels hard to justify given the output of the 50 is so darn good, and the focal length isn't all that much different.

Not sure the 75 cron will go up in value but the 75 lux has.

Problem is- for the WATE I would lose my only 'portrait' FL. not sure i would really want that.

I have the 21 and a CV12 so something is saying that I should look at the 50lux. Right now I would have to trade in the 75 and the 21SE to get the WATE. Not sure that's such a good trade.

Or sell the 75 and have a fair bit to put towards for the 50 'lux

I expected to sell my 75 cron when I bought my 50 lux late last year.

So far I have not been able to bring myself to do it. Although the focal lengths and the underlying designs are similar, the outputs are quite different to my eyes.

First of all, the 75 does take you closer. That quite changes how you 'see' with it and makes it a good competitor to the 90 cron.

Second, the 75's images do not appear to be *softened* by the bokeh as much as those of the 50, so the 75 remains clinically, brilliantly sharp when that is the effect you want to have. (A mixed blessing for portraits so the 50 gets the nod qute often.)

There are few lenses in the Leica range that are as technically excellent as the 75. When everything comes together, the resolution can be astonishing.

For some reason I find the 75 harder to focus accurately than either the 50 or the 90 and sometimes that is why I decide to leave it at home.

The focus throw of the 75mm Summicron is very short and the focus ring is rather small i diameter.

I sold mine for the same reasons, also the frame lines of my 75mm on M8 was not very precise, that changed with the upgrade to the M8, but still not right...

Never sell a Leica lens. You'll always come to a point when you buy it again, at a higher price...:o

I know this mantra but I really have to accept its just sitting there and I would rather have one I will use.

Financially I can't afford another lens but I can't bear keeping one just in case I want it in the future.

I tried it again for the day on Sunday and I just can't get comfortable with that FL. perhaps if I was shooting more people from afar I'd appreciate it- but I just don't think I 'get' it.

The 50 lux is calling me.

Have you tried a 90mm instead?

21, 35, 90 works well.

I don't like close portraits with a 50mm.

I also have a 75 that sits entirely unused, but the outlay is not as substantial as a 75AA otherwise I would have sold it on.....

I had the 75 lux as my portrait length lens .. but ended up never using it in favour of the 50 lux.

I've had similar thinking about the WATE - thinking instead now I might just get the 21 instead.

It is not money wasted. It will quietly grow in value over time, unlike stocks.

Not sure about sources in Europe, but if I were in your situation here in the US, I'd rent the lenses you're contemplating, make prints and see.

It shouldn't matter to you at all, but interestingly, the only lens I've ever sold (unless replacing one with a new iteration of the same lens), was the 75 Summicron asph. My rationale was primarily due to a dislike for the 75 frame lines, not the lens itself. And btw, I love the 50 Summilux asph.

If you'll use and enjoy another lens more, why not, regardless the choice?

Have 75 Cron and Lux and love them. That said use 75 somewhat sparingly, but when it's good, it's very, very good.

Question may be why you are not using 75. Wonderful for portraits and as good short telephoto. Also have 90 Elmarit and have to have one. Perhaps your mind is not considering the 75 angle.

Also have no issue focusing. Assume you have checked the body and lens to confirm they work to spec. If you don't nail the focus perhaps that's why you are shying away from the 75.

Your current range of lenses is wonderful. Hey, go out tomorrow with just the 75 to shoot a "roll of 36" and see what happens

But it's not something I need as a collectible. I want to use it not hoard it.

Oh, you will want to use it in a few years time. And you will pay a premium to get another one.
