Again A. Schopf didn't say a word about out-of-spec coatings or any other cause of the central veiling flare if i read him correctly.

I'm not sure what exactly you 'need/want' to hear. This is a huge admission from a CEO.

Does it matter what is specifically wrong? Leica have admitted the faults and will fix it. Why people continue to call this issue "rumors" is just plain silly and the reason why I try to avoid participating on this forum. Now I'm out before I get flamed for causing this flare issue in APO lenses.

It does matter for me if you don't mind so i don't share your indifference to this point.

I agree, it does matter to know what the problem is when one has spent $7,000 on a lens. Someone said that Lenca told them that if their lens was not exhibiting the issue, then not worry. Does that mean it will never have the issue or might later. If you want to sell the lens later how do you tell someone "OH! this one is OK!"

I guess what folks want is a few more facts that all.

You are right Bill. The Customer Care Test Certificate is crucial to keep with the lens, especially this one.

I quote the Certificate--

"This Leica product was tested and inspected by Leica factory trained technicians and found to meet all factory standards."

That piece of paper becomes golden in the future.

I can well understand this. Wouldn't it be the easiest way to contact customer care at Solms and ask what has to be done and how long it takes? I don't know the answers, though I think the chance that you get a few more facts aren't completey bad.

Not unreasonable a comment/suggestion.

I didn't read the whole thread for now, but as my AA has some really important issues with flare, I am interested to know from which serial number it has been improved.

Anyway a major fail in my opinion

I mean, don't they test their lens-layout before selling a lens? In real-world circumstances?

Apparently not well enough. Is this a Blackstone lens?

Just got back from a two week long trip, took a ton of photos with the 50 AA. Before this trip, I wasn't too concerned about the flares, but now I'll probably be sending it back to Germany for servicing.

I was in NYC in the street, lots of high contrast scenes, subjects in the shadows of buildings with a bright sky overhead, which is how it is in most big cities and a lot of my photos in these scenarios suffered from some obvious veiling flare. I say obvious because there are plenty of instances where I'm not so sure. Not a fun guessing game to play as a photographer. I'm disappointed Leica missed this.

But that is overshadowed by the lens' performance, which is stellar. If they were to release a 35 Summicron APO and even if there were reports of the same flare problems I would still sign up to buy one in an instant, even if Leica never intended to fix them.

The sooner you ship it the sooner it will be back...

Here in Europe it's less than a week turnaround on LPS repairs, when they know in advance it's coming...

We'll see how it goes. Was shipped to Allendale 9/27. Leica provided 3-day UPS service. Was received 10/1. Haven't heard anything since shipping.
