Good news from Fuji for us M lens users!

I just read Fuji is providing a firmware update in July that will finally give the X Pro-1 and X-E1 focus peaking! For me this is great! the zoom thing just is not fast enough to capture the moment with M glass mounted. I am also hearing autofocus is being improved. I have to say it here and now: Fuji and Leica are the ONLY camera and lens makers that make an extra effort to listen to us and give us what we want as well as support the products with MANY firmware updates. For everyone, you can shoot M glass with great options. If you cannot afford an M240, the X Pro-1 is the next best thing, and if you can afford it, then the Leica M 240. A win, win for us all!!!!

Come to think of it, it is a bit insulting to Fuji engineers to suggest that the best they can come up with is some kind of copycat Leica. They are perfectly capable designing their own excellent cameras.

Would be great if Fuji or any other mirrorless maker could implement a split image electronic device in their cams but as far as focussing manual lenses is concerned, current EVFs are too slow to compete with the least Bessa rangefinder IMHO.

Isn’t that what Fuji did with the X100s?

No idea. Could it work with manual lenses?

Yes, it could work with manual lenses – like a split-screen focusing aid on an SLR focusing screen, only electronically. It only depends on Fuji introducing an X-Pro2 incorporating this feature, which is bound to happen sooner or later.

Indeed. I can't wait until the 23rd. Fuji are leaving Leica standing at the moment both in terms of innovation and functional improvement by (free) firmware upgrade. My X-E1 is going to be even better to use with my Leica lenses in just over 3 weeks.

M8? Don't make me laugh...

Rangefinders don't make me laugh but EVFs would make me cry if i had some tears for cameras. I don't mind using a removable one a la M240 from time to time, provided it is better than the current OlyLeica, but i could never use those tiny TV sets all day long personally. Matter of tastes i know but there is decidedly nothing M in those electronic Visos.

I have to say adding Focus Peaking post purchase with firmware is incredible. Fuji has always been a very forward thinking company but this is something else. Most would wait for their next release, forcing people to upgrade. Well done indeed.

My M8.2s don't need any firmware updates or electronic aids, already with great focus and picture taking capabilities. Zero problems in 4 years.

And one mm slimmer than the XE-1, with significantly less crop.

Fuji has its act together, but it does make me laugh, Bill, given some of your specific M8 and other camera complaints over the years. :);)

Why so? You miss the point entirely I fear. Do you think my dislike of the M8 is founded solely on the thickness of the body and does not also encompass the reliance upon UV/IR filters and piss-poor construction and reliability record?

Of course not...I was only stating a fraction of your numerous complaints (let's not forget the crop, too), none of which have ever been an issue with my M8.2. That's why I bought a second one and, after testing, rejected the M9.

You enjoy criticizing...extremely strongly...products you don't own. I prefer to actually use gear, and choose that which works for me, and happy to let others determine their own opinions based on their use.

Your concern with UV/IR filters is but one example. These filters, based on my tests, even benefit the M9 (for b/w and color). And others using the new M report the same benefits. Many of the same people who complained about having to use any filters with the M8 are now happily using multiples of filters for the MM. Funny world.

And, as I said, my M8.2s have been totally reliable, with zero issues since purchase. The build quality is excellent. I read very little about M8.2 issues, and certainly much less than the M9, with cracked sensors, red edge, buffer and SD card problems, etc, etc. B/W results are clearly better than the M9 IMO, and in the opinion of many other forum members. And the color is superb with proper profiling.

I don't care that the camera doesn't work for you; each person is entitled to their own preferences and needs. But where you irritate is by stating...over and over...that the product is inferior in general, for anyone. Nonsense.

Whatever floats your boat, old chap. Your assumption that I haven't tried what I don't like is fatally flawed. I don't eat seafood either but that's because I have tried it and - to me at least - it is vile. I would never call the M8 "vile" - "flawed" is quite enough.

I would have thought by now that you would have got used to people expressing opinions that differ from your own. It's called "maturity". It never fails to amuse me that there are those who can never accept the slightest scintilla of criticism of their personal choices.

Pot calling kettle...

I'm content to let everyone make their own choices. For me, a camera is merely a tool one chooses. I don't criticize others' choices....ever. I dare you to find a post I've made in 4 years that tells someone else that their camera is crap, or that their choice is bad for them. (I do have fun, however, when someone vehemently denies that they'll make a purchase, and then inevitably does.) I've used the phrase "whatever floats your boat" countless times.

And I never take your criticism against me personally; I take it as scathing critique on the camera itself. You never comment that the M8 merely isn't right for you (which is perfectly fine and understandable); rather you condemn it in general, for all. But perhaps that's a distinction requiring a level of maturity you haven't yet reached.

Took me some time to wake up to the idea that i should put red filters on my lenses but i don't regret it now as the M8.2 is really a superb camera... with a nice coffee stain on the screen. :D Seriously it's become my favorite M since the M4 and is only outclassed by the M240 imho. Not a reason to refrain from using Leica lenses on DSLRs or mirrorless cameras needless to say but rangefinders are rangefinders and i don't understand how they can be compared to the formers personally.
