Production Issues with M240?

You would force them to speed up the development process at the cost of quality? Anyway, with a development cycle of approx. 3 years the most we can expect in 2014 will be an M-Typ 240 -2.

Goodness no! That could result in buggy firmware and dodgy mechanical quality....

Seriously though, just pointing out that photokina isn't exactly an X factor that you can't plan for, and isn't limited to Leica as a camera company.

You do have a point that it is a known factor, however all camera makers seem to have a tendency to cram all announcements into that timeslot, irrespective of the stage of development. Leica is clearly not immune, but better than most. They did not pack the XVario in, for instance.

Although I just did a very cursory google search for new cameras announced at pk2012 and I'm guessing, but they're all very readily available, and have been for a while, haven't they?

Not so with our chosen brand, sadly....

I only know of the delay in getting a Sony RX1 when I wanted one. I am sure they are more readily available now but for while they were hard to get. Just good to get a little perspective and it doesn't only affect Leica. I am sure it must be as frustrating for Leica as they want a satisfied customer base that has cameras in their hands and buying lenses for those cameras. Of course if you already have a body then this may not apply.

I don't believe Leica have not told any lies, but I do believe they have not told the entire truth.

Demand is one of the factors affecting deliveries to customers, and certainly the example of the X Vario affirms that with low demand Leica is able to stock the shelves, but it is not the only factor and the lack of ongoing worldwide shipments with any sort of regularity points to a more complex answer.

OK so in another words you don't have a clue and neither do i. I can just quote what Leica said exactly again and confirm that adding to the text with negative intent can be of no help at all.

The enormous demand has by far exceeded our expectations, with the consequence that delays in deliveries can unfortunately not be avoided.

Well actually I do think I have a clue, namely that the production output is well below normal and so the official explanation from Leica is at best incomplete and at worst marketing spin. Do you have a plausible explanation ICT for why major dealers around the world have received only one or two cameras in the nearly four months since release?

I also want to clarify my earlier quote, which I see has a typo on my part. The statement should read, "I don't believe Leica have told any lies, but I do believe they have not told the entire truth."

I see no revelations coming from this thread so I am going to go out and shoot images. Bye.

I agree, we all have our opinions, right or wrong and we can all continue to speculate. Only Leica knows for sure and we wait and see, and in the meantime we have great equipment to go and take pictures.

Happy shooting everyone and for keeping the debate lively and hopefully not personal.

Say what? I'm waiting for my great equipment.

I am one of those people who would like to switch from a DSLR to Leica. Since I have placed my order in March this year, I know I have to wait a couple of months. But if I read all the different threads in this forum, I'm afraid that I will get hold of my Leica M sometimes in 2014.

Nonetheless, does anyone know whether there was the same situation when the Leica M9 was launched? I ask because last year the Product Manager of Leica answered in an interview with Leica Switzerland the following, when being asked, if there will be waiting periods as with the M9.

"We were extremely surprised by the demand when the M9 was launched - but now we are better prepared. The production capacity will be increased compared. But at the beginning there will still be waiting periods of several months."

You can find the whole interview in German here: Courrier Nr.: 93 - Publikationen - Aktuell - Main - Leica Camera AG - Schweiz - Leica - Hasselblad - Panasonic - Linhof - Zeiss

I just hope they will catch up with the production! Because they don't seem to be better prepared!

The M9 was presented and launched in September, 2009. In Spring 2010, some customers reported they were waiting for no less than half a year! A few customers got theirs within a couple of days or weeks but most waited a few months. I ordered mine in January, 2010 and got it delivered in March, after an eight-week wait. Later I learnt that I was comparatively lucky; some customers (located elsewhere in the world) ordered long before I did and received their camera after I did.

So yes, the delivery situation of the M9 was a mess during the first six months or so. And don't ask for the availability of lenses ...

Regarding the M (Typ 240) ... in November, 2012, it was said that the new M's hardware was finished, and the production thereof was running at full throttle so when the firmware would be finished eventually, sales would start immediately from large stocks. In hindsight, it seems Leica's stocks had been just sufficient to provide all Leica dealers around the world with one demo sample each :(

Apologies, my post was meant to say "if you have already have a great camera" (be it an M8, M9 or other...) then you can get out there and still be taking pictures. Of course if you don't and are waiting for your M240 then I do understand having waited for all my gear over the last few years.

Ah yes, remember those M9's flying into Google maps? There was a fun and long thread on this forum about the first year deliveries of the M9.

I dont think the M9 roll out was similar to the current M240 situation. I ordered my M9 in December, 3 months after launch, and got mine in early March. At this time

my dealer had sold about 20 M9s and another dealer in Copenhagen had sold an equivalent amount.

This time they have not even had a demo-version yet, and only 2 copies have

past through the official Danish importer.

My dealer ordered 50 copies shortly after

the M240 launch, in the hope they could sell as many eventually.

The two situations look widely different from here.
