01af Posted June 7, 2013 Share #42 Posted June 7, 2013 By the way—I just stumbled across another voice regarding the Apo-Summicron-M 50 mm Asph (sorry for digressing). In one of his reviews, Ming Thein said, "Perhaps the best way of describing this lens is transparent. You see your subject, and not the signature of the lens—which is what I personally prefer." Seems that all who ever tried this lens are in perfect agreement about this point.
gpwhite Posted June 7, 2013 Share #43 Posted June 7, 2013 Well, I disagree! Thorsten's Noctilux images are very beautiful and have pushed me to rent one of those monsters to try it out for myself next month with the improved focusing of my M240... perhaps for portraits, the Noct is simply the best. But I love my 50 AA for the refinement and controlled colors of its images, and mostly because of its unparalleled 3D rendering. I shoot at f/2, or sometimes at 2.8 to maximize crispness. The attached may not be dreamy, like a scene from Inception, but it seems smooth and soft to me. However, I do agree that less than 2.8 is boring. Thorsten's newest "page," which I think was somehow related to this thread?, really nails Leica well in his opening. It is always the hallmark of Leica that the instruction manual is unintelligible... it is as though Leica is saying, "Look, we know what we are doing, and if you did, you would not read these silly pages. Please don't bother us with technical questions either because we busy trying to figure out our strap-lug-attaching machine. It did not come with instructions either." Peter Welcome, dear visitor! 01af Posted June 7, 2013 Share #46 Posted June 7, 2013 Well, I disagree! You do?!? I see your picture and read your post but I don't see any disagreement in there. To the contrary—the picture perfectly illustrates the Apo-Summicron's "transparency", even in this small format.
pedaes Posted June 7, 2013 Share #47 Posted June 7, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thorsten -the latest page is great, really practical and as ever helpful, thanks. Reads like an essential addendum to the manual. Not sure what some will make of your camera bag though!
Karl G Posted June 7, 2013 Share #48 Posted June 7, 2013 Wonderful series with very practical tips I just need a Leica M in hand, and will come back and read again. Pictures are, as usual, wonderful.
gpwhite Posted June 7, 2013 Share #49 Posted June 7, 2013 You do?!? I see your picture and read your post but I don't see any disagreement in there. To the contrary—the picture perfectly illustrates the Apo-Summicron's "transparency", even in this small format. Yes, I disagreed that the 50 AA lacks an interesting and characterizable signature in its images, given that the lens introduces so little alteration from "reality" other than separation between focus plane and its surround. I understood Ming Thien and Thorsten to offer this opinion and that you subscribed to it. For me, the 50 AA has a remarkable, unique and pleasing character (at f/2 or so) that I have not experienced with any other lens. Interesting concept of transparency, 01af... how did you interpret the last take in Inception? Was DiCaprio experiencing the tumbling top only mentally, or also physically? 01af Posted June 7, 2013 Share #50 Posted June 7, 2013 Yes, I disagreed that the Apo-Summicron-M 50 mm Asph lacks an interesting and characterizable signature in its images ... Aw ... I think I'm starting to understand where we—apparently—disagree. Well, this lens does have an interesting and characterisable signature: It's the total absence of any lens-specific signature ... given that the lens introduces so little alteration from "reality" ... That's the point exactly. I understood Ming Thein and Thorsten to offer this opinion and that you subscribed to it. As a matter of fact, I didn't subscribe to Ming's and Thorsten's opinions. Instead, I developed my opinion solely on my own devices, and then found out that Thorsten and Ming have developed the same. This might look like an academic sophistry to you, but to me it's a world of a difference. For me, the Apo-Summicron-M 50 mm Asph has a remarkable, unique, and pleasing character [...] that I have not experienced with any other lens. Yes, it most definitely has. Interesting concept of transparency, 01af ... how did you interpret the last take in Inception? Was DiCaprio experiencing the tumbling top only mentally, or also physically? Huh? DiCaprio is an actor, so you are talking about some sort of movie or TV series episode here? I don't like DiCaprio, except his performance in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape"
gpwhite Posted June 8, 2013 Share #51 Posted June 8, 2013 01af, no, I waste no time on sophistry (not even with my siblings). Perhaps you and I take different meanings from the same terms... and so it goes. We agree about DiCaprio... but the movie Inception is good. To the extent that one appreciates the suggestive power of images shot by Thorsten (and others) at f/0.95, the visuals and plot of the movie will also be fascinating. LVSBB6 Posted June 11, 2013 Share #54 Posted June 11, 2013 Hi Thorsten: just came across your updates on the Digilux 2 page regarding the X Vario, the focal length of the zoom lens should be 28 to 70mm (not 90mm) leica.overgaard.dk - Thorsten Overgaard's Leica Sites - Leica Digilux 2 sample photos and tests (as well as Panasonic DMC-LC1) - Page 1 of 3 Keep up the good work! Overgaard Posted June 12, 2013 Author Share #55 Posted June 12, 2013 Thanks. I had not noticed it was only to 70mm. I am less and less impressed by the lens, thought I do understand that the higher ISO of the camera make up for it, and the larger sensor of the X Vario vs. Digilux 2 make the end result in terms of DOF the same. I think future Leica X Vario models may be more and more light strong as they can probably pack more glass inside the lens. As they did with the D-Lux 6 that went to become a f/1.4 lens. Stealth3kpl Posted June 12, 2013 Share #56 Posted June 12, 2013 I don't like DiCaprio, except his performance in "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" I can't say I'm keen on him either and I agree that his performance in What's Eating Gilbert Grape was superb. It was the first film I'd seen him in, and Johnny Depp also. Pete
