Jeff S Posted June 7, 2013 Share #3 Posted June 7, 2013 Thanks for sharing. I often enjoy reading more about one's photo process than a technical camera review. I find your thoughts on shooting black/white with the MM versus the M240 interesting, and somewhat ironic given your mantra that it's YOU, more than what the camera can do for you, that's key. The MM provides you with the mindset to shoot b/w, and also the discipline to see in b/w since there's no choice. But rather than apply the same discipline for seeing when you use the M240, you shoot both color and b/w and choose later. I much prefer to choose color or b/w before I press the shutter, even when the camera can do both. The mindset comes from me, not from the camera choice. That's one reason the MM has less appeal for me; I don't need it for the mindset. [A side benefit is that shooting the M240 only DNG rather than DNG + B/W makes for a faster camera and a less cluttered computer.] Only rarely will I change my initial color vs b/w intent for a pic later on the computer . To do otherwise seems to further conflict with your other mantra to get it right first (let the lens and camera do the work), and not rely on the computer. No right or wrong; just different strokes, as they say. Minor correction on your camera comparison chart: the S2 is weather sealed. Jeff
Overgaard Posted June 7, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted June 7, 2013 One of the benefits of writing these articles, I just realized, is that I get to find out what I actually think of the cameras. I get to define their soul, so to say. And one thing that I realized, and still wonder about, is that I shoot more color photos with the M 240. And if that is a result of having used the MM, or it is the M 240 colors that just works better for me? ... I spend a bit of time thinking about that
Jeff S Posted June 7, 2013 Share #5 Posted June 7, 2013 And one thing that I realized, and still wonder about, is that I shoot more color photos with the M 240. And if that is a result of having used the MM, or it is the M 240 colors that just works better for me? ... I spend a bit of time thinking about that It's also a bit of chicken and egg. B/W requires excellent knowledge about how color works, and color requires much thought about composition and tonal relationships, so it all feeds on itself, regardless the reasons. I didn't shoot much color for decades using film (having a b/w darkroom influenced that), but that changed with my switch to digital four years ago. The result has benefitted both my b/w and color sensibilities. If I only had the M240, there would be a healthy mix of color and b/w, since I love both. If I had an MM as well, I think I'd be tempted to carry both cameras, and then the M240 would inevitably become the color one. And if I picked only the M240 for the day, it might get a b/w workout, too, depending on mood and subject. But with only M8.2s for now, I'm pleased with the b/w and color, and happy just to focus on the pics and not the camera. I suspect, though, that the M240 will eventually replace one of the M8.2s, for its various user benefits. Unlike you, however, I do spend time focusing on the printing end of the chain...monitor, software, printer, inks, papers, profiles, lighting...and all that. Because at the end of the day I enjoy prints almost as much as I enjoy taking pics, and I can incrementally improve the look of those prints with relatively small tweaks on the processing end rather than spending a fortune on a new camera and lens with every new iteration. And contrary to your thoughts about accomplishing perfection with the camera and lens, for me those processing tweaks make for better prints, regardless the quality of the camera gear to start.
