Advertisement Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Hi lct, Take a look here Mini M? [MERGED] AKA X-Vario. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest willjanurgucken2000 Posted June 8, 2013 Share #1402 Posted June 8, 2013 That was my biggest concern, too. While the AF of the RX1 isn't exactly blazing, it nearly always locks on, and you can "feel" the AF lock with the camera in your hands. I know that it sounds a little convoluted, but I was surprised how well it works. Thanks. In fact I can imagine that's both effective and tactile. douglasf13 Posted June 8, 2013 Share #1404 Posted June 8, 2013 So it appears to essentially be an X2 with a better looking top plate and a fixed zoom.
douglasf13 Posted June 8, 2013 Share #1405 Posted June 8, 2013 Thanks. In fact I can imagine that's both effective and tactile. Yeah, with a little practice, I've gotten pretty accurate. This biggest thing to practice is visualizing the focus area dropping a bit in the OVF as the subject gets closer, to account for parallax, but at least it doesn't have horizontal parallax to worry about, too. barjohn Posted June 8, 2013 Share #1406 Posted June 8, 2013 So it appears to essentially be an X2 with a better looking top plate and a fixed zoom. No, the X2 is smaller and nearly 1/2 the weight at 4.33 x 2.72 x 2.05" and 12.17 oz.
barjohn Posted June 8, 2013 Share #1407 Posted June 8, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I don't know about you or your wives but there is no way my wife would want to lug around a camera of this size weighing nearly 2 pounds. So I would say they are aiming this camera at dentists and lawyers but then I thought hey...wait...I'm a lawyer and I wouldn't want it. Therefore, it is for dentists and doctors. douglasf13 Posted June 8, 2013 Share #1408 Posted June 8, 2013 No, the X2 is smaller and nearly 1/2 the weight at 4.33 x 2.72 x 2.05" and 12.17 oz. I wonder how much of that weight is just because if the large zoom lens? The body itself looks just a littler bigger than the X2.

Ecaton Posted June 8, 2013 Share #1410 Posted June 8, 2013 if the specs are correct, at its size and weight one would have to call is a FAT mini. Really, 24oz, that is heavier than many DSLRs and at 5.23" x 2.87" x 3.74" it is anything but pocketable. No Mini and No M. Analogy to the Mini Countryman, an obese "uglisized" Mini. marknorton Posted June 8, 2013 Share #1411 Posted June 8, 2013 If the rumours that stock of this camera will be available at the get-go, people waiting for an M Typ 240 will feel rightly aggrieved that Leica devotes resources to getting this new camera off the ground while failing to even scratch the surface of demand for the M. Makes you wonder why. Maybe Leica has subcontracted out manufacture to Panasonic who can make 1000 cameras a week blindfolded. Maybe there are component supplies restricting M volumes. Maybe the M build is still far too labour intensive, some of which could have been engineered out. As this new camera appears to be nothing more than an X2 with a zoom lens and not remotely related to the M other than through some marketeer's over-excited imagination, there is little of interest for me here. panoreserve Posted June 8, 2013 Share #1412 Posted June 8, 2013 I have a feeling the next RX would be a wider wide, but who knows? A 35mm and something like a 75-85mm would be a nice combo. I'm quite sure, in the next weeks Sony will present us another version of their RX-1: no differences in focal length or sensor design, but without an AA-Filter (cf. D800E; Leica M & S; even the newest Nikon A- and Ricoh GR- P&S-cameras...)

dkCambridgeshire Posted June 8, 2013 Share #1414 Posted June 8, 2013 Both the X1 and X2 are both mediocre IMHO and the new 'mini M' X Vario will be likewise. Not to say they won't sell plenty of them though. Have you ever used an X1 or X2 and if so was it for any length of time? A colleague chose an X1 in preference to an M9 because the X1 files were/are in his opinion superior to those he got from an M9 - and he has won numerous awards with his X1 pics both B&W and colour. Mediocre pictures they are not. dunk

Mediocre pictures they are not. dunk Outstanding pictures that win awards can be made by mediocre gear. I think the consensus on the internet right now is that the X1/X2 are quite mediocre in the sense that they are part of a big sea of digital cameras that can provide nice image quality but nothing special. I don't think many would rate the X1 as superior to the M9. I would think the iphone by now has more awarded photographers using it than the M9. The X1/2 are quite ok, but nothing special. And not worth he asking price. Imho, but I do not have a photographer friend with many awards to his name that has said so.

Or is your humble opinion based on internet speak? And I did not state that the X1 is superior to the M9 - but did say the files my colleague produced were superior to those he produced from an M9 - specifically as regards blown highlights when using the M9. I also have an X1 - and have won awards with its images. dunk

Yes I have tried the X1/2. I have seen some very nice results from them too, but I wouldnt buy one myself. I stand by my remark that they are mediocre cameras (in design and specs). Leica more than anyone should have been able to come up with a truly great digital compact. Fuji have done much better.

Couldn't agree more. Plus - the whole 'teaser' campaign makes a mockery of the 'real' M range. I wish Leica would use their PR/Marketing resources to inform its customers of what happens regarding their unfulfilled orders instead of telling them a Mini M is available. digitalpowershot Posted June 8, 2013 Share #1420 Posted June 8, 2013 An f2 constant aperture lens would be enormous. Totally unpractical on a camera of this size with an APS-C sensor. That's before considering the cost of such a lens. I know how a f/2,8 constant aperture lens look like, let alone f/2,0. I do not understand the hype for a f/3,5-6,...zoom camera, called mini"M", if the leaks are true.
