Well, I prefer an optical OVF, and returned the EVF, because, while it is the best EVF to date, I still prefer using the OVF occasionally supplemented with the LCD.

I also don't think the RX1 was just an experiment, and I'll bet that the rumored new RX camera will simply be a different focal length, but still remain modular to use with the RX accessories, which I'm fine with.

I like the modular nature of the RX1. You can add grips, viewfinders, etc., and then strip it down for ultimate packability.

Hi Douglas

I quite agree - I might even be interested if they bring out a 50mm version (never could deal with 35mm).

I think they should broaden it a bit and make another one 24 or even 21 . That might lead to an 85 version later, unless they are going to make an interchangeable one , which may be slightly bigger, but I wouldn't rule out .

Yeah, I was a 50mm guy, too, but the M9 somehow changed that for me, and I found myself only shooting my 35 Cron.

I have a feeling the next RX would be a wider wide, but who knows? A 35mm and something like a 75-85mm would be a nice combo.

When shooting the RX1 with the OVF are you relying on the audio beep for focus confirmation? Or is there some other cue that you use - hearing the lens drive motors stop?

I have always liked EVFs, but trying to imagine OVF + AF has me really intrigued.

if the specs are correct, at its size and weight one would have to call is a FAT mini. Really, 24oz, that is heavier than many DSLRs and at 5.23" x 2.87" x 3.74" it is anything but pocketable. No Mini and No M.

That was my biggest concern, too. While the AF of the RX1 isn't exactly blazing, it nearly always locks on, and you can "feel" the AF lock with the camera in your hands. I know that it sounds a little convoluted, but I was surprised how well it works. I've been testing it a lot, and I rarely make a focusing error, even compared to my X100s' OVF. Of course, if there's an AF or metering situation that looks particularly tricky, I can just use the LCD, but that doesn't seem to be happening very often with this Voigtlander OVF. That's why I sent the EVF back

There's also a little green dot that lights up at the bottom of the LCD when focus is achieved, but that would require you to look down and maybe pull the camera a bit from your face. Focusing by feel works nicely for me, although YMMV.

A rather dogmatic comment considering we still do not know the exact specification of the new camera(s). When did Leica ever make a mediocre camera ... ie a Leica design as distinct from another manufacturer's modified design?

dunk

Both the X1 and X2 are both mediocre IMHO and the new 'mini M' X Vario will be likewise. Not to say they won't sell plenty of them though.

Both the X-Vario and the X2 use a 16.5 mp APS-C sensor so I wonder if they are in fact the same.

Wait a minute... it's bigger than the Fuji x100 and that has a viewfinder.
