Will Leica update to the VF-4 EVF?

I dont understand all the EVF bashing...if you don't use it thats your choice.

For me its invaluable option that adds tremendous value to my Leica M. I use the RF 90% of the time, but to have the option to slide on the EVF and use it for a macro shot, or even in conditions where its very difficult to focus with Noctilux is priceless to me.

I also vote for an improved option. The VF-4 would be nice.

Why do you quote me about bashing the EVF? I like the concept. I just don't use it because, it freezes the camera up in warm situations. It doesn't work right. Leica screwed up the implementation of the EVF. I thought everyone understood that Leica screwed the pouch on the EVF.

Leica even reported they had an update in firmware to solve the temperature problem way back in September of last year. What happened with that?

Like you, I'd love to have the VF-4. Realistically, that will never happen. Leica hasn't even figured out how to get the VF-2 to work right.

If, I were you, I'd be writing Leica and asking for a firmware release that solves the crappy implementation of the VF-2. Dreaming about a VF-4 is just ridiculous.

I guess that was supposed to be the "improved stability when using EVF-2" in firmware 2.0.0.11 (Oct 2013).

That firmware only dealt with color and lens correction along with some limited bug fixes. Very limited in scope. It addressed none of these other problems like the EVF heat issues that Leica acknowledged and stated they would fix in the next update.

I think they just swept it under the rug. Too bad they are so unresponsive. I guess they think we are stupid and have short memories.

I suspect Leica is already on to the next Leica M-mini and they are allocating zero resources to the M240. Kind of like the abandonment of the firmware problems they never fixed on the M9.

I guess we have seen the end of the 240 fixes. Oh well, it is is a nice camera... too bad Leica just didn't fix the last little niggles.

Curious what the issues are regarding the "heat issue" with the EVF? Seems I am in the dark on this one...

it freezes up your M240 altogether to the point you have to pull battery out to reboot it (this does not happen if EVF is not in use). It is majorly reported from many Asian users..who shoots in hot and humid environment.

You do not have to pull the battery on a "heat freeze" Simply switching off and on clears the jam. Otherwise disabling "auto switchoff" will prevent it. At least, that was my experience in Africa.

thanks on the info on the auto switch off! definitely will come in handy.

.......mmmmmm ...... Still patiently waiting for a heat related lock-up with the M+EVF .... Currently in Cyprus and happily shuffling the EVF between M and X-Vario ...... And if you want to see how it should have been implemented on the M the take a look at how it works on the XV ......

........ In fact the ergonomics and ease of functionality implemented on this little camera puts some aspects of the M to shame ....... :o

I've been using my M + EVF regularly through our hot Sydney summer weather and have yet to experience a camera freeze. Of course, now I'ce written this the camera will do so next time I use it .

Maybe those intense forest fires you had melted the temp sensor inside your M.

I love that it has a built-in diopter. Let's hope it works on the M240.

I bought one of those VF4's, because the diopter correction goes to -4. The VF2 only goes to -3.

It did not work on my 240.

Now I use the VF2, but added an eyecup, which costs $12, and makes a world of difference in the viewfinder image.

Any News in Evf-4?

Just to being the thread back. Digilloyd claims some CPU issues concerning data bandwidth.

Spoke to a Leica rep today (T launch in perth) and asked if there will be an upgrade to the EVF4 T some point.

I was told "no, not going to happen, it is incompatible with the processor in the M"

Ouch

That's a serious oversight, how many people bought a Leica Evf and now can't spend more money upgrading.

Also I'm pissed because that's a $7000 camera and, you know, it feels cheap to have a CPU incompatibility.

And, it smells like BS. I'm a software guy, but shouldn't it be possible to bridge the incompatibility? Might not be cost effective, unless it's really a bit size problem.

Thanks for the info in any case, feeling a little hrumph.

Luckily I tried the VF2 at the shop before ordering one. It is very difficult to use for anything but framing. Focusing is not accurate enough, unlike the EVF in my Sony A7, probably due to the low resolution and refresh rate. I suspect this is one of the things that Leica will upgrade whenever they decide to release the M240P.
