macpants Posted April 24, 2013 Share #1 Posted April 24, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I know in the early days of the M9 there were problems with support for some memory cards. I am still waiting for my M to arrive but was just wondering if I could use fast, large capacity cards such as the San Disk SDXC UHS-I (128GB). In fact any recommendations would be welcome. Many thanks for any advice. Lee
Advertisement Posted April 24, 2013 Posted April 24, 2013 Hi macpants, Take a look here Leica M - Supported Memory Cards?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
01af Posted April 24, 2013 Share #2 Posted April 24, 2013 ... was just wondering if I could use fast, large-capacity cards such as the SanDisk SDXC UHS-I (128 GB). Yes, the Leica M (Typ 240) is compatible with the SD, SDHC, and SDXC memory card standards. Of course, this does not entirely rule out the possibility of incompatibilities of some sort or another with individual card brands or models.
Bill W Posted April 24, 2013 Share #3 Posted April 24, 2013 Most folks here would advise against such a large capacity card. They are most likely expensive. I prefer several smaller capacity 16 GB cards. It is the old all your eggs in one basket and if it fails, etc.....
jaapv Posted April 24, 2013 Share #4 Posted April 24, 2013 +1. What will you do if the dog chews your 128 GB card with 14.000 images on it?
Bill W Posted April 24, 2013 Share #5 Posted April 24, 2013 Shoot the dog!!! I think a 35mm would do the job.
thighslapper Posted April 24, 2013 Share #6 Posted April 24, 2013 (edited) Smaller cards tend to be quicker for the same rated speed. I can't see much point going over 16 Unless you are completely shutter incontinent it's hard to fill one of these in a day..... From tests on the 'start up/standby' speed problem thread, Sandisk Extreme class10 45mb/sec seem to be consistently good performers. jdlaing Posted April 24, 2013 Share #8 Posted April 24, 2013 +1. What will you do if the dog chews your 128 GB card with 14.000 images on it? I'll miss him.
macpants Posted April 25, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted April 25, 2013 I haven't got a dog - but I do take your point. I mainly use my camera for travel photography and usually off load the pictures to my Mac each evening. I know there is sense in smaller cards but with ever increasing file sizes I am starting to find that 128GB is the new 64GB !
jaapv Posted April 25, 2013 Share #10 Posted April 25, 2013 I travel a lot - but I find the optimum size is either 8 or 16 GB. I usually take about half a dozen 16, backup and keep the full cards elsewhere.
mjh Posted April 25, 2013 Share #11 Posted April 25, 2013 I have no cards with a higher capacity than 16 GB.
glug Posted May 5, 2013 Share #12 Posted May 5, 2013 I'm in UK and have seen prices from £16 on Amazon to £55 in the local camera shop for the Sandisk Extreme Pro 95MB/s 16GB SDHC Card. I don't want to buy lousy fake cards or pay over the odds so which supplier can be trusted? Cheers Glenn
digitalfx Posted May 5, 2013 Share #13 Posted May 5, 2013 Anyone tested the Sandisk Ultra vs Extreme vs Extreme Pro? I typically us the Extreme Pro, but Best Buy has the Ultras on sale for $14.
kaiwing Posted May 6, 2013 Share #14 Posted May 6, 2013 I have inserted a Sandisk Extreme 64 GB to my M9. It did not show the capacity and cannot be formatted. I have taken some photos and its only shows the first image is 1 of 1. It was there, but I did not know how many images I can take. I guess the largest capacity for M9 is 32GB. Anyone can clarify this?
01af Posted May 6, 2013 Share #15 Posted May 6, 2013 I have inserted a SanDisk Extreme 64 GB to my M9. [...] I guess the largest capacity for M9 is 32 GB. The M8, M8.2, M9, M9-P, M Monochrom, and M-E can only use SD and SDHC cards but no SDXC cards. Hence 32 GB is the maximum indeed.
kaiwing Posted May 7, 2013 Share #16 Posted May 7, 2013 The card having problem is a 64GB SDXC card.
jaapv Posted May 7, 2013 Share #17 Posted May 7, 2013 The card does not have a problem, it is simply the wrong card for the camera.
