Don't go there with tape. It ruins the moment. Especially when placed over the Rangefinder window. I also find it makes me drop the camera because of the added weight and unbalance it creates. Also, it ruins the aerodynamics - Sometimes the wind catches it and it will fly right out of your hand.

... Too bad my M just got recalled and they're probably going to put a red dot back in Solms...

Just remove your silver dot before you send it to Solms then when they return it with a shiny new red dot you'll have a spare to paint black if you want to.

Pete.

Re the dot (yes, again): I know the m(240) dot is bigger than the M9 dot. But is the hole behind it also bigger? Coukd a smaller dot (black for example) be put on the M? Or is there a reason why not?

Is the red dot version of the product (i.e as the product design team intended) really so offensive?

IMO yes. It is ugly. And more so on the M cameras.

And now it is even bigger.

The recess it is stuck into will be bigger.

Couple of months ago I spray painted my red dot on the m9 black. I got a metallic matte finish spray paint. The paint covering the Leica letters wore off quickly (just by thumbing it), but the black paint on the red surface is still in great shape.

You could try something similar on the M. If you go to an automobile parts store, I'm sure they would have a similar shade of gray which might match that of the Chrome M.

Mine's very similar to yours in that I have the same Abrahamsson soft release and the 'clear' self-adhesive plastic dot on the focussing button but not the Irish Dot. I have also added a thin strip of black, self-adhesive, high-grip stair tape to the curve of the faring over the focus wheel on the back and it helps with handling immensely, especially with the 80/1.4 Summilux-R on the camera.

I'm disappointed that Leica decided to return to a similar slippery covering to what was applied to the M8, particularly since it's designed to be used with heavy R lenses.:( I'd have much preferred the same covering as the M9-P has.

Pete the Irish dot is a sticky felt furniture protector I have bought some acetone but am working up the courage to strip the red dot) and I also find the clear plastic dot I put on the focus/compensation button really helps. I like your idea of the tape for the thumb grip as I agree it needs something to add more grip. Any chance to a link to what you actually used
