I'm really happy with my chrome M, but not a big fan on the new big (no pun intended) red dot... Would love it to be black or ideally get rid of it altogether. I guess removing it is not a great idea as it will leave the an ugly placemark...

Anybody tried to recolor / replace / remove the dot on their M240?

When I receive my chrome M, I plan to remove the red dot, drop it in acetone overnight and put it back on using a glue dot (permanant glue dots are available at Office Depot). It should be pretty easy if it is anything like the M8 and M9 threads related to the subject. Past threads say that a small amount of heat or friction will loosen the glue to remove the existing red dot. Silver on silver should look pretty non-descript and similar to vintage Leicas.

If you do something like this please post a photo and mention if there are any unique issues with the M. Please recognize, I have no first hand experience since this will be my first rangefinder. If anyone else has any experience or suggestions please share your thoughts.

Would acetone remove the red paint from the dot and reveal the silver color of the metal? Is that the point of soaking it in acetone?

That is what was recommended/mentioned on an M8 or M9 thread. It strips the red paint off. Some people then paint the dot black, then sand the raised letters, but I think I would prefer all silver. You can probably pick up a couple threads on the subject by searching for "black dot" "silver dot", etc.

The earlier threads said they used the existing glue or new glue. I already purchased the glue dots at Office Depot and they look like they would work well as they are very thin, easy to apply and can be cut to size.

Here is one thread, but there are others also: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/59679-how-remove-red-dot.html?highlight=remove+red+dot

I think I read somewhere that part of the RF adjustment mechanism is behind the dot. Do I risk screwing something seriously up in the camera by removing the dot?

Not if you're careful. I just replaced my dot the other day. I was able to use a little heat to loosen the glue and then wiggled the red dot lose.
