Yarosuav Posted April 18, 2013 Share #1 Posted April 18, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I'm really happy with my chrome M, but not a big fan on the new big (no pun intended) red dot... Would love it to be black or ideally get rid of it altogether. I guess removing it is not a great idea as it will leave the an ugly placemark... Anybody tried to recolor / replace / remove the dot on their M240?
Advertisement Posted April 18, 2013 Posted April 18, 2013 Hi Yarosuav, Take a look here M240 Red Dot delete / replace. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
KanzaKruzer Posted April 18, 2013 Share #2 Posted April 18, 2013 When I receive my chrome M, I plan to remove the red dot, drop it in acetone overnight and put it back on using a glue dot (permanant glue dots are available at Office Depot). It should be pretty easy if it is anything like the M8 and M9 threads related to the subject. Past threads say that a small amount of heat or friction will loosen the glue to remove the existing red dot. Silver on silver should look pretty non-descript and similar to vintage Leicas. If you do something like this please post a photo and mention if there are any unique issues with the M. Please recognize, I have no first hand experience since this will be my first rangefinder. If anyone else has any experience or suggestions please share your thoughts.
Yarosuav Posted April 18, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted April 18, 2013 Would acetone remove the red paint from the dot and reveal the silver color of the metal? Is that the point of soaking it in acetone?
KanzaKruzer Posted April 18, 2013 Share #4 Posted April 18, 2013 (edited) Would acetone remove the red paint from the dot and reveal the silver color of the metal? Is that the point of soaking it in acetone? That is what was recommended/mentioned on an M8 or M9 thread. It strips the red paint off. Some people then paint the dot black, then sand the raised letters, but I think I would prefer all silver. You can probably pick up a couple threads on the subject by searching for "black dot" "silver dot", etc. The earlier threads said they used the existing glue or new glue. I already purchased the glue dots at Office Depot and they look like they would work well as they are very thin, easy to apply and can be cut to size. Here is one thread, but there are others also: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/59679-how-remove-red-dot.html?highlight=remove+red+dot Edited April 18, 2013 by KanzaKruzer added link
Guest Duane Pandorf Posted April 18, 2013 Share #5 Posted April 18, 2013 It's not a M but I prefer the black dot:
timd. Posted April 18, 2013 Share #6 Posted April 18, 2013 i think that unfortunately the red dot on the m is bigger than the dots on the previous models. that means repainting instead of simply replacing.
Yarosuav Posted April 18, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted April 18, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) I think I read somewhere that part of the RF adjustment mechanism is behind the dot. Do I risk screwing something seriously up in the camera by removing the dot?
Guest Duane Pandorf Posted April 18, 2013 Share #8 Posted April 18, 2013 I think I read somewhere that part of the RF adjustment mechanism is behind the dot. Do I risk screwing something seriously up in the camera by removing the dot? Not if you're careful. I just replaced my dot the other day. I was able to use a little heat to loosen the glue and then wiggled the red dot lose.

Paul J Posted April 18, 2013 Share #11 Posted April 18, 2013 Just prize it off with a butter knife or use chisel.

Yarosuav Posted April 23, 2013 Author Share #13 Posted April 23, 2013 OK, I went and "desaturated" the red dot on my chrome M240. Much prefer the new look. Pics to follow if I figure out how to post them tonight...
algrove Posted April 23, 2013 Share #14 Posted April 23, 2013 What if you just leave the dot off like on the Monochrom. Then, you just need a black screw like on the MM.
jaapv Posted April 23, 2013 Share #15 Posted April 23, 2013 Not if the hole is triangular like on all other dotted cameras.

thompsonkirk Posted April 24, 2013 Share #18 Posted April 24, 2013 Hi jarek, Did you 'desaturate' with acetone, as mentioned above? Looks great to me! Kirk PS, on black M9s, you can chip the white paint out of the M9 lettering pretty easily. Can you do that with the black M on 240s?
MP3 Posted April 24, 2013 Share #19 Posted April 24, 2013 Here it is, sorry for crappy smartphone pic: Looks Great Jarek ! How did you 'desaturated' the red dot to make it silver ??
KanzaKruzer Posted April 24, 2013 Share #20 Posted April 24, 2013 Looks great. I will do the same whenever mine arrives. Can you post another photo without the glare? Did you use acetone and a glue dot?
