Blimey, Leica certainly know how to manipulate sales of their cameras because as surely as night follows day, a dotless ('P' version) of a camera follows the dotted version. Is the red dot version of the product (i.e as the product design team intended) really so offensive? Why not just poke the red dot out if it is so bothersome – the exposed hole will probably look better than a kind of faux bleached look which IMO is akin to sandpapering the edges to get a contrived brassy look.

Looks great. I will do the same whenever mine arrives.

Can you post another photo without the glare?

Did you use acetone and a glue dot?

Thanks. Yes, I removed the dot and then used acetone to remove the paint (comes off no problem). Glue dot to put it back on. All-in took me less than 30 minutes, most of the time spent with a toothbrush to remove the red paint from all the nooks and crannies around the "Leica" letters.

To me it looks much less conspicuous than the red dot which I found a little loud. I was also thinking about removing the black paint from the "M" letter but decided to leave it alone for now. All-in I'm very happy with the monochromatic look now.

I'll post a better pic later today when I'm at home.

To each their own I guess. The red dot just didn't sit well with me...

I was thinking initially about just removing the it, but the hole underneath is off-center and looked really ugly exposed. Not to mention I wouldn't like any crap to get into the cam adjustment.

Indeed.

I saw a very nice condition M3 in a dealers window which has 'Leica' written or perhaps engraved in red ink on the front of the top plate near the rangefinder window!

Personally the red dot doesn't bother me at all, in fact I rather like it.

I think the red dot is nice as well but I wish they kept the dot smaller like it used to be.

Yes, the silver on the dot does not match the color of the camera. It's a different material / finish and will look different depending on the light. I don't mind it though.

Black dot would look cool as well...

Now I'm worried that if my camera gets recalled (because of the stap lugs), Leica is going to put a red dot on it again when it goes to Solms.

I like it!

My silver M240 will probably go the same way...once I get the camara

ps: a sharper photograph would be nice.

Can you get the camera to photograph itself in a mirror and then reverse the image?

I prefer the black dot as linked in post #17, even on chrome. I exchanged a red for black on my chrome M8.2; it came standard on my black M8.2. Just because.

At some point I expect there will be another M version anyway, either dot-less or black, or whatever...but for a lot more cash.

Glad to hear the permanent glue dot worked. It appeared to be the best option and I already have the 1/2" size waiting on my desk for a new M. You need to get an RX100 to take photos of your M.;)

Good thinking 99 - That silver dot looks zexy. Makes it look more moderne, definitely more discrete. Well as much a bright silver camera can look discrete anyway. Shame the silvers don't quite match though.

The dot is the same color as the camera, but the surface finish is a little diferrent (the dot is more polished I believe). When you look at the camera straight on, there's practically no difference. However, at an angle and depending on the light the dot will take on a different shade than the camera (sometimes lighter, sometimes darker) as you can see in the pic.

Too bad my M just got recalled and they're probably going to put a red dot back in Solms...

Anyway, I can't believe we're spending so much time discussing this... Let's go take some pictures before my M goes away for a month :(
