Leica M strap lugs unscrewing (merged)

It would be nice if Leica could share the serial numbers of those cameras affected. Many collectors in Asia don't actually register their cameras and its only done so after it has been sold to someone else (often several months later).

If someone is buying the camera in the resale market it would be good to know this.

Leica will never do this. They never say exactly how many cameras they have sold.

The registration system is there for exactly this kind if reason, so that Leica can communicate with their customers in a direct way. If customers choose not to register, then it's impossible for them to do so. It's in the cusyomer's interest to register.

(please see Jaap's comment above about his long-time loose lugs that reinforces this comment from Leica).

Sorry - that was a (possibly lame) joke - my cameras have no loose screws....:(

Hi Jaap

I rather appreciated it - like you, I've had loose screws for many many years (and another one comes loose most days). My M is fine on the other hand.

I've not had the call yet (444432x) so I guess it's not in serial number order.

Seems to me that they're quoting a 24 hour turnaround - it's a great opportunity for them to really boost the reputation of their customer services . . . . or not!

all the best

I really do have loose screws at the moment - the fixations on my 10 year old total ankle replacement joint have failed.

I am actually going to arrange that my M240 goes back to Solms to have the loose screws repaired simultaneously with my going to Basel in Switzerland at the end of May to have the loose screws (and the joint) in my ankle replaced. I will not need a camera while I am in hospital there, nor for the few weeks I am immobile afterwards, so the process will be less of an irritation than it would otherwise have been. Also, it is not exactly as if I am short of other film and digital cameras to use in the meantime.

Likewise mine needs to go back too. Rang Leica helpline this morning and they were the model of courtesy and efficiency, assuring me that they anticipate being able to pick up, repair and return to the UK within a week. It goes off to Solms on Monday.

When I read about this problem I immediately remembered the old story by the Dutch photographer Ed van der Elsken (1925-1990) which he wrote for his wondeful book 'De ontdekking van Japan' (The discovery of Japan). All about a Leica M6 strap eyelet problem.

(my own M6 luckely never had a problem)

I scanned the original and made a quick rough translation. Just as a historical anecdote because it still is a remarkable tale.

And it also shows that times have changed. Leica Customer Service is much much better now !

Got my email today. 4699** series affected as well.

B***er - both of mine are affected. Serial numbers start:

46983**

46987**

I'll have to stagger the returns and keep a close eye on the lugs in the meantime (they seem to be rock solid at the moment!

This is really unfortunate and my heart goes out for all those effected; the numerous customers, the dealers, Leica people, etc.

I hope Leica will arrange for minimum inconvenience, send out prepaid mailers, arrange for pickup, quick scheduled repair, delivery, ready status information and possibly loaners.

E-mail arrived from Leica saying my M was affected (46999xx, I misplaced the 3 in s/n in earlier msg because one of my mental lugs had loosened).

I will ask if I can delay my M's return visit until symptoms are present (or I have decided on second body) and eventually post Leica's response. Also be helpful to learn about turn around time from Leica users whose bodies present with Loose Lug Effect Syndrome... I believe this can be characterized as M-LLESS (which solves Leica's trip up over M240) :p.

When Leica recalled the M8 in early 2007, there were about 1650 cameras out there IIRC and apart from the modification to the sensor board (change of two components), users were offered 30% off a lens of their choice. I chose the WATE for my first body, the 75mm Summilux for my second and the prices I paid seem ludicrously low by modern standards, lens price inflation has been something else.

It seems Leica are just saying sorry this time, does make you wonder whether developing the camera in one place and making it in another is to blame.

I can report, if others haven't, how Leica USA are handling this: after you reply to the Leica (Solms) email by contacting Allendale, NJ, they email a UPS label. You take that, and your M, to the local UPS outlet and they box it, insure, and send it off. I'm traveling so can't do this til Monday. But it seems a fair and efficient way of dealing with what is a pain in the neck for all parties.
