Michael Hiles Posted March 2, 2013 Share #2 Posted March 2, 2013 The Leica connection seems highly questionable to me. I suspect that such and instrument, if made by Leitz, would say E. Leitz Wetzlar set in the Leitz logo (not Leica). And the well documented views of the Leitz family regarding the Nazis makes me wonder if such an item would ever be produced by E. Leitz Wetzlar. pico Posted March 2, 2013 Share #3 Posted March 2, 2013 It appears here as well for $1250 USD. I agree with Michael Hiles regarding the Leica branding. Besides, the engraving is just too good to be circa 1936, except the end cap which I suspect was the back of a commemorative pocket watch or a common applique to other merchandise. It is a downright evil hoax.
luigi bertolotti Posted March 2, 2013 Share #4 Posted March 2, 2013 Leitz made lot of binoculars (many for military, of course) and some monoculars... I don't remember if they did also extensible telescopes : anyway, the "Leica" plate is imo a clear sign of something wrong/fake.... LEICA was a CAmera... I don't think Leitz named like this other devices (of course, the recent story around the Leica brand - name - companies has changed all this)
someonenameddavid Posted March 2, 2013 Share #5 Posted March 2, 2013 And the same telescope, not as well aged chemically, with the "Ross London" engraving http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?itemId=111017776559&index=6&nav=SEARCH&nid=93044706462 David. If the brass stuff is not Soviet, pretty much it will be Indian. E Leitz was very good in chrome plating their products in 1936 and they would not make "cheap stuff"
Heiko Hahn Posted March 4, 2013 Share #6 Posted March 4, 2013 If Leitz had made anything as tasteless as this item (and I am very shure they did not), they would at least have avoided ridiculous spelling mistakes - it's "Olympiade" in German, not "Olimpiade". Please note that the word is spelled with "i" in Russian...

UliWer Posted March 5, 2013 Share #9 Posted March 5, 2013 It's definitely original. You can find the proof on the lens cap. It says "Olimpischen" and "Olimpiade" haec olim meminisse iuvabit
pop Posted March 5, 2013 Share #10 Posted March 5, 2013 It's at least as German as the ur-German musical instrument, the Bala-Leica.
dietersbg68 Posted March 6, 2013 Share #11 Posted March 6, 2013 In addition to the Olimipa / Olympia issue, The Brandenburg Gate was never official symbol of the olympic games, it was the Olympia Bell, it can be seen on the Wikipedia article: 1936 Summer Olympics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Dieter
250swb Posted March 7, 2013 Share #12 Posted March 7, 2013 You can see the traces of where the 'medallions' were sweated onto the telescope and lens cap with solder. Crude work. Steve

giordano Posted March 23, 2013 Share #15 Posted March 23, 2013 Lots of other features scream FED fake. How stupid do these people think vintage Leica buyers are? wlaidlaw Posted March 23, 2013 Share #16 Posted March 23, 2013 They're honest (or naive) enough to say "Réplica de la Leica II fabricada en la Unión Soviética (URSS) en los años 50. Edición limitada." John, I realise that now. I did not read far enough down. I was just going by the title and the first few lines, which seemed to imply it was a genuine Leica. The price is far too high for a tricked up FED. One of my employees bought a much nicer fake (a Luftwaffe one) than that for me in Kiev for $30. wlaidlaw Posted March 23, 2013 Share #17 Posted March 23, 2013 John, It would be ironic, if in a few years time, so many Zorkis and FEDs had been faked into Leicas, that a real unmolested FED or Zorki became a collectors item......but maybe not There are two Leica copies I would like to have, a Leotax Elite with Simlar 5cm f1.5 and a Reid and Sigrist III with a T-H 2"/f2. I had a Reid II (the military model) with that Taylor Hobson lens and I now hang my head in shame at how little it was sold it for in the mid 1960's.
