_sparkie_ Posted January 2, 2013 Share #1 Posted January 2, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello everyone, I have been reading this forum for a long time now but only signed up recently and this is my first post. My M8 got the coffee stain so I contacted Leica and as of today its on its way home to Germany. I know that they cant fix the screens anymore so I dont actually know what is going to happen in regards getting a new camera, but does anyone know how long it takes for cameras to be accessed and to receive contact back from Leica? I carry my camera with me everywhere and it feels very strange not having it with me anymore, the sooner something comes back the better. Happy new year everyone. Advertisement Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Hi _sparkie_, Take a look here Wait time for coffee stained M8?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
earleygallery Posted January 2, 2013 Share #2 Posted January 2, 2013 It shouldn't take very long at all, but they will only make you an offer for a replacement M9, although others have reported that they don't actually have any M9's left and are trying to locate stock (presumably by buying cameras back in from the dealers), so you may have a wait for a new camera. AFAIK nobody has yet to be offered an M-E replacement. Do please update us on the offer/outcome.
martha Posted January 2, 2013 Share #3 Posted January 2, 2013 Yes, please update. I sent my M8.2, under warranty, with coffee stain to Leica, New Jersey, here in the US and was told that no word will be forthcoming until at least January 17, 2013. Cheers, martha
_sparkie_ Posted January 2, 2013 Author Share #4 Posted January 2, 2013 yeah I will let you guys know how its turns out. Hhhhhmmmmm, I guess if an offer of a deal on a new camera is what they are doing then I need to go with it, just need to find some money first. I had to sell all of my other gear just to get the M8 set-up. The leica dealer here in Dublin still have M9's in stock so maybe they will contact them. earleygallery Posted January 2, 2013 Share #5 Posted January 2, 2013 The other option is to just accept the fault and keep using your M8 as is. The coffee stain issue is apparently unrelated to LCD failure. That said, if you can afford the 'upgrade' then it's probably worth taking.
_sparkie_ Posted January 2, 2013 Author Share #6 Posted January 2, 2013 There is no chance I could afford a new M-E, M9, or M for a very long time (if ever) so if I get an offer from Leica I think I will take it. The trade-in value is going to be higher then what I would get from selling the M8 on privately.
_sparkie_ Posted January 5, 2013 Author Share #7 Posted January 5, 2013 Advertisement (gone after registration) Ok I emailed leica to see what the wait time was and they said I should be hearing from Germany next week! wow thats fast. Hopefully its good news, I'm going nuts here without a camera.
doolittle Posted January 5, 2013 Share #8 Posted January 5, 2013 As somebody living not too far from Dublin and the owner of a coffee stained M8 I will watch this thread with interest! Do keep us updated.
_sparkie_ Posted January 5, 2013 Author Share #9 Posted January 5, 2013 Are there many other Irish people on here? I have not seen too many M's around Ireland. Yeah, I will keep you updated.

There are a few more Irish floating around the forum, not too many but you do see some posts from time to time! A good few Irish Leica enthusiasts on RFF too. _sparkie_ Posted January 8, 2013 Author Share #11 Posted January 8, 2013 I just got an email back from Leica saying that they are looking at my camera and will get back to be soon.
Pampaloni Posted January 8, 2013 Share #12 Posted January 8, 2013 Hello i would like to share my current experience with this kind of problem. I sent my M8, out of warranty, about before Christmas, i sent it because it started to display the Shutter Fault error ( but it wasn't a permanent error, everytime i got the message i turned off the camera, removed the battery and then it started again ok and then after some days again the error and so on, very boring stuff ) and it has also a light problem with frame lines visualization. I got reply from Solms about some days ago, they told me that they also found the coffe stain problem: funny stuff, i did not see it, i thought it was some kind of bubble air from the LCD protection i put on the display. So, they immediately told me that this problem can't be fixed and offered me an EX DEMO M9, so a USED camera, for a very high sum of money ( in my opinion, considering they will keep, of course, my M8, too ). I know other italian users having the same situation and they were offered about 2,300 euros for a M9, 2,800 euros for M9P, in my case leica offer for a USED M9 is far more than 3,000 euros. They also told me that they can fix my camera BUT NOT the coffee stain issue, i am waiting to get their offer for repairing but, anyway, if i go this way i will have a fixed camera but with a defect ( the coffee stain ); considering i already decided about 2 months ago to sell the camera, this is going to be a problem. Hope this could be of some interest for other M8 users, bye! Marco
Ronazle Posted January 8, 2013 Share #13 Posted January 8, 2013 Hello all, I posted this on another thread but will repeat for the benefit of those with questions. I sent my M8, long out of warranty, to Leica USA with a coffee stain problem The camera was sent to Solms for eval and several weeks later I received an offer for a new m9 with full warranty for $3K (USD). Several weeks later a new M9 (s/n 4420xxx) was received) The entire process took between 1.5 and 2 months. The NEW M9 was/is superbly aligned, rangefinder wise, and the auto exposure is much, much better than the M8. regards, ron
Pampaloni Posted January 8, 2013 Share #14 Posted January 8, 2013 They offered me a DEMO M9, so a USED one because as you know demo units are shown on exhibitions and shops so lots of people placed their hands on it for sure, for 3,500 euros with 10% discount, so about 3,200 euros. I think this is very unfair and i will not accept. So they could fix my M8 for some problems BUT NOT the monitor, as we well know, i would have a camera with a defect and since i want to sell it it would be very, very bad, i think. I really don't know what to do!
doolittle Posted January 8, 2013 Share #15 Posted January 8, 2013 From another thread on the site here I thought Leica had a price policy in place*: Within warranty period (2 years): free of charge Within three years: 1500.- EUR (M9) and 1920.- EUR (M9-P) Within four years: 2000.- EUR (M9) and 2420.- EUR (M9-P) Within five years: 2500.- EUR (M9) and 2920.- EUR (M9-P) Within six years: 3000 EUR (M9) and 3420.- EUR (M9-P) From past dealings with Leica I have found them fair. Maybe it would be worth contacting them and maybe talking to somebody else and see what they could offer you against a new camera under the coffee stain replacement policy*, if such a thing exists *Disclaimer: third hand information, so I could be completely wrong and haven't verified this with Leica myself. _sparkie_ Posted January 8, 2013 Author Share #16 Posted January 8, 2013 wow, well if that is the case there is no way i will be able to afford an offer for a camera from them. i shall wait and see what happens.
Ronazle Posted January 8, 2013 Share #17 Posted January 8, 2013 I suspect the fixed table quoted (Doolitle's post) has migrated down with the decline in market value of the m-9s. The one I received was assembled recently (I think) given the 442xxxx serial number - it was truly a new M-9. The one I received did not have VAT applied. regards, ron
lct Posted January 9, 2013 Share #18 Posted January 9, 2013 VAT does not apply to non-EU resident customers.
marknorton Posted January 9, 2013 Share #19 Posted January 9, 2013 Leica continues to provide muddled, inconsistent and shockingly poor support to M8 users with failed displays. Now there's a surprise.
Pampaloni Posted January 9, 2013 Share #20 Posted January 9, 2013 I suspect the fixed table quoted has migrated UP since they offered me an EX DEMO ( so USED one ) M9 for 3,570 euros !!!! My M8 is within six years so... i feel really disappointed..i really feel i will have them to send me back my M8 with coffee stain and try to sell it like this anyway.
