AndyMc Posted March 12, 2013 Share #45 Posted March 12, 2013 I have posted my details previously on this thread but noticed some people can work out dates from serial codes? how? My camera is 3111335. Anyone work that out for me? A
eckart Posted March 12, 2013 Share #46 Posted March 12, 2013 As far as I know this is not possible anymore. It is just possible to say something like this M8 was made between February and let's say May 2007 and the number 3109977 is not necessarily older than number 3109978. wlaidlaw Posted March 13, 2013 Share #48 Posted March 13, 2013 As far as I know this is not possible anymore. It is just possible to say something like this M8 was made between February and let's say May 2007 and the number 3109977 is not necessarily older than number 3109978. Leica told me that for the M8, they released serial numbers usually in batches of 2500 consecutive numbers. This is controlled by the accessory shoe, whose number is then hard coded into the camera at a later point in the manufacturing process. The assembler can pick any number at random from the 2500 numbers. The factory does record the date that each serial number leaves Solms on its way to a national distributor. The history of the very early M8's (October to December 2006) is slightly fuzzy, due to the change in sensor and the requirement to change sensors in already completed or near completed cameras, that had not been sent out. Thus my 3800304, which must have been in the initial batch of 2500 serial numbers released, did not actually leave the factory until 31st December 2006. I received a letter from Leica explaining all this, in an effort to reassure me there was not something funny going on with my camera. It had had over 300 shutter releases before it came to me (in a sealed box) and the serial number on the box and paperwork, did not match the camera. Leica sent me correct paperwork with the letter of explanation. Wilson

wlaidlaw Posted March 13, 2013 Share #50 Posted March 13, 2013 My brain must not have been in gear this morning. My M8 serial number is 3100302 not 3800304 as I stated above. Wilson

falkk Posted April 5, 2013 Share #52 Posted April 5, 2013 Mine is 3201326 36.665 actuations bought as a demo-model from Meister-Camera Berlin in April 2009 - it was untouched, when I got it - full warranty, but it already was an old camera. shutter replaced end of 2010. but still have 1/8000. I use it a lot - it is wrapped on my hand basically every day. It looks used, but still works perfect. I've send it to Solms to get cleaned and re-adjusted two / three times. I ordered m 240 and decided to keep the M8 - just because I love it. Falk
designed Posted April 5, 2013 Share #53 Posted April 5, 2013 Mine is 3107134 with 15400+ actuations, currently in Solms getting it's sensor readjusted. It was there a year ago getting a new power switch. And a year before that it visited the local representative because the rangefinder was knocked out of alignment. designed Posted April 6, 2013 Share #57 Posted April 6, 2013 Speaking of this, any idea what serial numbers were affected when Leica decided to fix some of the early problems? I suspect my M8 should've been there but missed out on it.

Numbers 3102500 through 3107500 may need the T2 upgrade.
