M10, the new M8

I think the M10 will be exactly where the M8 is today. An interim product.

It's likely to have features like OVF, live view and video which may or may not gel well with the proven features on the M9 and will most likely be refined in the M11.

Even if I switched from M8 to M9 immediatly I never felt the M8 to be a compromise.

I am still looking to rebuy a "cheap" M8 as a second for tough conditions and as b&w body. (if I can resist the MM)

If there will be an M10 and if it will have the features you mention - which means CMOS - then I am sure that there will be more issues than with a M9.2, i.e. an improved M9. I am not sure it will be as bad as with DMR or M8 but still enough to wait for the following model.

I think it will be difficult for leica to develop a successful EVF (or whatever supplimentary focussing system they choose) first time around with the next M, so its successor will be the one to buy, or the one after that, ad infinitum......

"Live View" requires a tripod, so I dont think it would fit in well with traditional leica type shooting

Really interesting point rramesh. Not sure how I feel about it.

The hints are there for something big. I tend to pull my expectation back half way and even still I think we are going to see something of considerable advancement.

I think it's pointless but fun to predict. Here goes...

I currently think we will see a new solidified M Range

-Mx (M10) hybrid evf, high MP CMOS with Live View, maybe Video (not sure about that)

-Mk (Classic/Klassik M9.2) Upgraded traditional optical M.

-Mm the existing Monochrom

I think they will go with a hybrid/optical EVF in the Mx and the leaked image was an interim prototype and or red herring. It just doesn't seem M enough to me.

I would like 36 MP but my prediction instincts leave me at 22-24. With the introduction of the APO 50 and a declaration of it was the future architecture of the M line lenses it wouldn't totally surprise me if we saw 36±MP as it seems this is what the lens is capable of.

I would go with the Mk if the pixel count is higher. I want 36MP.

Will it be an interim product? I don't feel it will but maybe it's wishful thinking. They will have probably learned alot from existing tech like the Fuji's finder. They've had time and resource to develop. Also the introduction of the new factory and retail outlets tend to suggest something big too.

Think we're also likely to see at least one more new line APO lenses. Most likely wide. I have wishes for a new 75 Lux but I'm not sure it will happen. I think it's safe to say the 28 Lux is almost a given.

Leica is a visionary company and release visionary products. The Monochrom was scoffed at when the rumour was out....I even had the thought that the MM was destined to be the M10. But they decided for what ever reason to go with the EVF and instead of shelving/canning it they changed it to a mono design for immediate release. I have no idea if that's possible it's just a baseless thought. I just feel we will see MM quality in a colour package.

I really think the timing is just about right for big things to happen.

Nothing is perfect, better is not always better, we are led to beleive small steps are big steps, change is improvement, specification is everything.

I do think the mainstream flagship M will come before any purists version and I hope Leica get the fundamentals right it's been a long wait. I stumbled across the e-mail from a friend sharing the M9 announcement at the weekend, whilst looking for a recipe !

I dont think the M10 will be interim in the sense that the M8 had design flaws, I do think it will be refined and have the usual glitches and software upgrades. I actually think the MM was an innovative test to test the concept of a B&W model while M10 sensor development contnued.

Here's a thought, a CMOS back end with a Leica filter - no more Bayer, differentiation from stock CMOS and Leica algorithms to keep the Leica look

I haven't ever seen a digicamera which, 2 years after intro, cannot be considered an interim... is the curse of modern life and tech market : but, luckily for me, we are still in a good summer for mountaineering... so I'm reasonably sure that next weekend I'll wear my leather MEINDL boots... 15 years old and not an interim product - the definitive for walking fine in high mountains :p

In terms of digital cameras everything is interim in that it will inevitably be replaced or eclipsed by a more evolved model incorporating newer technology. Among cameras still being produced, only the handful of available film cameras or more significantly, view cameras, can be purchased with confidence knowing they absolutely represent terminal development, should that be a requirement

Andy I have to disagree with you.

I havn't seen the M10 as yet, however everything I am hearing about it (not from the Leica forum) is positive.

As for the EVF, frankly I am not that keen on them, but something is better the nothing, remember it's

A module type so it's up to the user if he wants to use it or not, personally I prefer the mirror.

As for the Live view, I love it, because it's the best light meter you can get.

When I use my Leica R lenses on the Canon DSLR I use it quite often, not for focusing as it's not easy

for me, but to adjust to the lighting condition.

I simply set my DSLR to manual, then select live view, then adjust the meter whils't viewing it on the screen, then return back to viewfinder focus and shoot, to me simply it gives me perfect results.

So I see no reason why this procedure couldn't also apply to the M10, (providing it will have an EVF and Live view) so now I am anxiously looking forward to it's introduction, the M10 could be the first Digital Leica that I will buy.
