stump4545 Posted August 25, 2012 Share #1 Posted August 25, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) when i started with the m9 i wanted a one lens kit, a 50mm and i wanted to keep it that way. one normal lens and no cluttered digital slr controls. but then, the 50mm cron turned into the 50mm lux, then i picked up the .95 and kinda wanted to get rid of the lux but couldnt even though i rarely use it. then i picked up a 90mm, then a 21mm, then 35mm, then a 75mm, now the latest a 24mm. even though some of these lenses are close in range ex. 21mm to 24mm each one is different. 24mm is wide but not too wide and sometimes 21mm is better (close quarters). from wanting the simplicity of a 1 lens kit it my kit has turned into a complete lineup of m lenses. when i go out shooting i still only carry (2) lenses but it is really a nice to choose which 2 to bring depending on what i envision i am going to find in my environment. (usually a 50mm and a wide 24 or 35) anyone else's quest for a one lens kit turn into a collection?

Michael Geschlecht Posted August 25, 2012 Share #2 Posted August 25, 2012 Hello stump4545, For some people it is just the reverse. They have less now that they are more familiar w/ their camera(s)/lens(es). Some people who prefer less discover they have feet. Best Regards, Michael Who does 90% of his photos w/ a 35mm lens on a full frame "M". Some w/ a tripod but mostly hand held.

stump4545 Posted August 25, 2012 Author Share #5 Posted August 25, 2012 too addicting. i do find myself going back and forth. while i know i have feet a 90mm creates an image that is different then a 24mm image no matter where you stand which = more lenses. TomB_tx Posted August 25, 2012 Share #6 Posted August 25, 2012 In 1968 I bought my M4 with a 90 (fat) Tele-Elmarit, as I had used one before and loved the lens. After college added 50 and then 35 Summicrons - and that was my M kit for 40 years. I didn't use the 90 much, as I noticed it became fuzzy and low contrast, so I was happy with just 35 and 50 most of the time. A few years back sent the 90 to Gus Lazzari who said a rear element was out of position, and it has been stellar since his repair. I use a 35 most of the time since I got an M9, partly because I can crop in quite a bit an maintain quality. A 50 now feels too narrow. I've since added a CV 21, and then a CV 75 to force myself to a more intimate view. But most of the time I'll just put on a 35 and be happy.
Michael Geschlecht Posted August 25, 2012 Share #7 Posted August 25, 2012 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello stump4545, 1 thing you might try is limiting yourself to 1 or a small # of lenses in a given situation & see how few of them are needed to capture the images you want. Don't forget: This is for you personally. It is not a value judgement. When you have & control things & they make your life better then they are good to have providing you can afford them. When things begin to control your life, no matter their usefulness, then it is time to question their value. Not only in photography. You might try a systematic experiment w/ a number of lenses over a period of time & find out what you can best capture w/ certain 1's in certain circumstances. You may find certain lens's overlap or your feet make other lenses not as necessary. Then you can balance & choose what is important for you. As well as what is not. Now, when you have all you have, is a good time to experiment. For me: Image quality is 1st. Then comes portability & ease of use. Then how much bother things are to switch around & change. For me more weight, along w/ smaller size & ease of use are preferable to bulk & clutter. Both physically & mentally. But not always. Personal choice & cirumstance dependent. MarkP Posted August 26, 2012 Share #8 Posted August 26, 2012 Lens retail therapy cured me of prolonged and severe GAS. I've all the lenses I want and plan on rationalising a bit in coming years. I have my fair share of fast exotic lenses, but I'm not at all tempted by the 2.0/50 APO-Summicron or 0.95/50 Noctilux (I really like the old 1.0/50 E60) I almost never take more than one or two lenses at a time unless I'm travelling. IWC Doppel Posted August 26, 2012 Share #9 Posted August 26, 2012 One lens would be very easy, and I could compromise if I had to, I would not be able to take some shots with all the walking in the world. But I could live with it I'm only a hobbyist after all. I could definitely live with four and my choice would be different to others I am sure. I'd choose my 35 Summilux Aspherical and add 24, 28 and
muddyT Posted August 26, 2012 Share #10 Posted August 26, 2012 =} for mine from 1 lens 'cron rigid f/2 have turned into 20s and going into 21s soon.
farnz Posted August 26, 2012 Share #11 Posted August 26, 2012 I try to use only one lens at a time. I may take more than one lens with me but I haven't learnt the knack of mounting two lenses at once without the OROLF. Pete.
thighslapper Posted August 26, 2012 Share #12 Posted August 26, 2012 Hi stump4545, This is entirely normal Leica behaviour. Unlike you I take 2 spares in a little Lowepro Streamline 100 bag and the choice is dictated either by what I expect to photograph or alternatively pure whimsy and a bit like picking lotto numbers..... You can CARRY around too many Leica lenses but you can never OWN too many lenses Whatever I take it's like meeting an old friend again and realising why I really like them..... all are useful in their own way and have their own character. There are a couple I never 'bonded' with (90/2 and 24/2.8) for some reason... but I could no more dispose of the rest than sell my children...... tappan Posted August 27, 2012 Share #13 Posted August 27, 2012 I have used one lens for so long... I use my 35 'cron version 1v. I have an 18 super elmar, 24 elmarit, 50 'cron, 90 elmarit. I have not used these in a LONG time. Make me think, sometimes, that I have too many.. Mark

Get low, get close and put your 24 on :-) I could not part with my 24 f2.8 it's wonderful. But I feel the same as you about my 90 Elmarit-M but might spend more time with it after 3 days solid with a 75 Summilux (borrowed) which I am now bonding with and will have to give it back ! Messsucherkamera Posted August 28, 2012 Share #15 Posted August 28, 2012 A 28 'cron and a 50 'lux account for close to 90% of my images - but there's nothing wrong with having a couple of "wants" in your bag to go along with your "needs." Where to draw the line in terms of kit? At one pound or kilo less than causes you discomfort. Your gear should not cause you pain. JMHO.
IkarusJohn Posted August 28, 2012 Share #16 Posted August 28, 2012 Reading this forum is probably the worst thing for your bank balance. I bought an M9 and 35 Summicron in October 2010, and suspected that I might want to add to the 35 mm lens. Two years later (almost), I am carrying in my bag: M9-P (upgraded), with 28 Summicron ASPH M3 (serviced) with 50 Summilux ASPH 21 Summilux ASPH & viewfinder half a dozen ND & B&W filters WhiBal card, spare film, spare batteries, cable release, small tripod, SD cards, camel hair brush, camera connector kit for iPad, iPad, wallet, glasses, phone, keys ... Yep, lightweight kit alright!
algrove Posted August 28, 2012 Share #17 Posted August 28, 2012 anyone else's quest for a one lens kit turn into a collection? Oh, yes!!!!!!!!!! The other day I decided to take all my lenses out of their leather cases due to the possibility of fungus build up and put them on a shelf. I had many leather lens cases in one place when my wife came in and said in astonishment "Do you have that many Leica lenses?" I was caught red (dot) handed. Thank gosh she didn't see all of them! enboe Posted August 28, 2012 Share #18 Posted August 28, 2012 Never heard of that one. Where did you find out about that? Oh, and 39, going on 40.
batmobile Posted August 28, 2012 Share #19 Posted August 28, 2012 Yes, but I have now gone the other way and rarely use anything apart from my 24/5 - 35- 50 I have a 24 lux and 25 CV and a 35 Summarit and CV 1.2 II, so I can choose low light, or smaller walkabout daytime lenses, but the focal lengths remain the same. 28mm, 21mm, 75mm and 90mm don't get used for now, but I still have them. For specific things I can see myself pulling them out, especially the 21mm, but it has been a while and I don't feel inhibited. Most of the time I shoot only with a 35 and 25. Magic combo for me. Per P. Posted August 28, 2012 Share #20 Posted August 28, 2012 anyone else's quest for a one lens kit turn into a collection? Yes yes yes. All too familiar. Somehow I have ended up with all options from 21 to 135 covered. Ridiculous since, no matter which combo I take with me for a trip, it turns out that 70% of my photos are made with 35 and 50mm. Dependent on the trip I pack one lens (50), two (35/75), three (28/50/90), four (24/35/50/90 or 28/50/75/135), or even five (24/35/50/75/135). As you can maybe guess I almost never use the 21mm but am scared of selling it because of the risk that I would need to repurchase. At least the fact it gets so little use keeps me from buying anything wider
