erl Posted July 12, 2012 Share #3 Posted July 12, 2012 Ben, this pic has great subject character, great lens character, and of course great photographer character as a consequence. Some will (probably) say the DOF is too small, his ears are OOF! Well I say that is part of what makes it work. This result is what I like to use my Noct for, and get criticized for. The bottom line is the picture gets noticed and therefore, one hopes, appreciated. Because of the narrow DOF, the viewer is left in no doubt as what to see. Nice colour too. rodriger Posted July 12, 2012 Share #6 Posted July 12, 2012 D picture is saying something else and the statement is something different. It's totally different from each other. So I think unless d concept is clear there is no scope posting anything. If something says to be about d image den it's an amazing and captivating. melissah Posted July 16, 2012 Share #15 Posted July 16, 2012 Kinda want to see this in B/W. whatever. The scar is amazing. I didn't see it at first look because the eyes are so beautiful. Pretty sure he's been using those eyes in that way to cover the scar for sometime now! Excellent
farnz Posted July 16, 2012 Share #16 Posted July 16, 2012 Ben, What a captivating image and up to your usual stellar standard. The scar resembles what is gruesomely known on this side of the pond as a 'Chelsea grin', which is a razor cut from mouth to ear inflicted on suspected stool pigeons (informants) because it's very painful, takes a long time to heal, and permanently marks the victim as a stoolie. Pete.

Pete. Understood. BTW, this young man is an incredibly articulate individual. From Kingston, Jamaica. I have sailed & raced all through the Caribbean Islands. Aside from Haiti, Kingston always reminds me just how tough & short life can be.
Jamie Roberts Posted July 18, 2012 Share #19 Posted July 18, 2012 Ben, it's an awesome portrait; one of your best, I think, and that's in a field of excellent work! An important quibble for me: your DMR let you down here with colour (or your post process). He is too "orange" for me by a long way, even in PS. Also, the blown out background isn't doing you any favours either; I think it would be a lot stronger with corrected skin tones and the background printed down. Just my thoughts--it's such a strong image I'd like to see it a bit different. Let me know if you want and I'll post something to show you a quick version of what I mean. BW is the other option, of course But in corrected colour it's very powerful, too.
roguewave Posted July 18, 2012 Author Share #20 Posted July 18, 2012 Jamie, I'm always interested too learn new techniques from you. Your a real wizard and perfectionist in these domains and I stand in awe of your technique. With that in mind, let me at least explain the circumstances: this young man was just leaving a large open space, Bryant Park and walking towards Time Square. There are just too many light sources to count, with all the tall buildings and the huge LED displays generating enormous light that is bouncing off the narrow street we are on between the Park & the open square of Times Sqaure. The most important color for me was his eyes & his lips. Both I believe are as true as I can remember. I did try & reduce much of the color in the background, but left a hint of the whirligig of light & life in NYC's most brash stage. I await your image. All the Best.
