I bought mine at a local photographica auction, along with an 85mm Summarex, two different lots. The slow speeds are a bit erratic and the frame counter is stuck at the start point but I can put up with that.

I use the Canon version of the Summarex, the Serenar 85mm f/1.9.  Superb glass, both.

I did buy it from someone who knows how to take care of their gear. The finder came from a 'bay seller in Japan. I placed the order Sunday and it arrived four days latter. On the other hand, the stinky A&A half case is being returned to B&H in New York City. It was sent out on Sunday and has made it as far as Missouri. Same shipper for both.

"...stinky A&A half case..."?  What was wrong with the A&A half-case?

I've had my M4-2 in a lovely deerskin A&A half-case since I bought it. It's one of the nicest half-cases I've owned.

I have one of their leather (cowhide) M10 half-cases as well for M10-M and M10-R ... It is also a nice fit although I'm not as delighted with the strap-lug snapovers as I am with the M4-2 half case.

I have owned four Artisan & Artist half cases. The first two were great. Fit the camera well and easy to remove to change film. They were sold when I sold those cameras. The last two came from B&H Photo and smelled like they had been sitting in a damp warehouse for years. I tried all kinds of tricks to get the smell out and none of them worked. Should I ever decide to get another half case, it would be a A&A, just from another seller.

Let me know if you happen to have an extra Color-Skopar hood sitting around.

Ah, I see. That's crappy. ... I've always bought my A&A half-cases from Photo Village (in NYC) or direct from A&A.

Sorry, I have just the one round hood and LH-2 for the Color-Skopar 50mm lens. The Voigtländer LH-2 lens hood is still available in very limited quantities from CameraQuest.com, if you need one: Voigtländer LH-2

I traded some gear to KEH and got a really nice 50 2.5 Color Skopar in return. It is missing the original hood but I do have an LH-2. Called Cameraquest and the owner told me the short hoods have been unavailable for several years.

My spouse and I are preparing for a cross country road trip. Oregon to Pennsylvania and back. Taking the M4-2, 35 1.4 Nokton Classic, 50 2.5 Color Skopar and a whole bunch of Tri-X.

Oh well; I imagine there aren't many round hoods available because they were standard issue ... most people got them with a lens, didn't buy one as an accessory. Perhaps one will turn up on Ebay with a damaged lens.

Sounds like a great trip! I'm still working out what photo gear to carry on my NorthEast bicycle adventure scheduled for August. :)

Hello Arnaud,

The M4-2 is the replacement for the M4. The M4 weighs 600 grams.

Part of the 77 gram difference is the lack of a self timer mechanism & steel gears (specific gravity 7.85). In place of brass gears (specific gravity 8.56).

Which means the steel gears weigh approximately 92% of what the brass gears do.

Best Regards,

Michael

Many thanks Michael for your valuable explanation.

...

Anyway, I have many M4 that don't weigh 600g like MP.

Rundomly weighting them "nude" as usual, my lightest M4 is BP at 538g, this one

heaviest is silver chrome 557g.

...

In use the natural companion of the light M4-2 is the very heavy Summarit 1.5/5cm , 306g.

Luckily the balance of the combo is still fine.

My M4-2 preview lever insert had disintegrated so I contacted Leica and they sent me a new one. I got 2 in case my M4-P insert disintegrates too.

Total cost was $5.25.  Free shipping to Canada as well. Very helpful the folks in New Jersey.

When I retrieved my M4-2 from the shop that was closing, the first thing that happened was the rivet holding the articulating part of the advance lever had sheared. Fortunately, I had a MP style lever on hand. Got home, was loading a roll and the plastic insert from the frame selector fell off. I’m going to leave it as it is.

Hello Arnaud,

That is interesting.

The 1968 Schmidt, Hong Kong, Leitz Dealer catalog reprint says:

Silver chrome M4 - 600 grams

Silver Chrome M3 - 595 grams

Silver chrome 50 mm f2 Summicron Rigid Bayonet Mount -  260 grams

Silver Chrome 50 mm f1.4 Summilux Bayonet Mount - 360 grams

Bright MR Meter & Bright  MR4 Meter -  Both - 75 grams each

How do those tally with anything that you might have?

As we all know, there is a certain amount of unexplained variation in various parts of Leitz/Leica.

Best Regards,

Michael

Indeed, Michael,

going further, as I have at hand my notes of "weights",

not a lot but some unexplained variations

M4-P black # 155xxxx 543g

M4-P black # 158xxxx 537g

M4-P silver "1913-1983" # 163xxxx 550g

Took a trip from Portland, Oregon to Oregon, Wisconsin. Don Goldberg worked his magic, installing a new 3D printed flash block (supplied by Albert at midnight camera repair) and a M3 lens button collar. Camera received a few new parts that were missing, plus a lubrication and adjustment. Ready for another 45 years.

Decided to give the Artisan & Artist LMB-M3 one more try. Just received one from Popflash and it smells like fine leather. It's going on the M4.

Just thought I'd share a couple of of pics of my new to me M4-2 as I'm new to the forum and new Leica tbh

Really really pleased with the camera.

I've literally just posted it off this morning to camera-works UK for a service and a couple of other bits doing. It's gonna be a long 4 months😂🙈
