gyoung Posted October 31, 2011 Share #41 Posted October 31, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) I remember first using the old IBM PC-about the first of its kind. It had big old floppy disks 5.25". That was right around the year you mention. It seems in about 1981 those first came out. Also remember the fist 10MB hard drive. Back then we thought it was a big revelation to have that. How times have changed, huh? The first computer we had at the School of Art & Design used 8 inch floppys, fortunately they didn't last long, and the first network (of 8 bit CPM machines) ran off a 20mb 'Winchester' My wife trained as a programmer at ICL in the early 60s, using punched tape to to do the programmes which were run overnight, with errors reported for correction the following morning. In comparison my M3 doesn't seem so dated comapred to an MP, or even an M9 Gerry.
Advertisement Posted October 31, 2011 Posted October 31, 2011 Hi gyoung, Take a look here Where are those Leica-M Forum members?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
darylgo Posted October 31, 2011 Share #42 Posted October 31, 2011 As a new member to the forum I find it civil and kind in most every way. I marvel at the number of posts by members and their willingness to share knowledge gained over the years. So, to each and every one, thank you, with gratitude to the grumpy ones also. To this latter group, I do request some help, I want to add a lens, should I get a 35mm or a 50mm? Also a case, which should I buy?
pico Posted October 31, 2011 Share #43 Posted October 31, 2011 Today, often one cannot ask a question as a Leica beginner or offer opinion without being called more or less "stupid" With respect, I don't see much of that here, however I and others have been directed to search the site because a subject was well covered. I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that my style of searching has been spoiled or directed by Google's behavior - I have learned to intuit its behavior (or it, my behavior). I've not had adequate success with our search feature, but have sometimes received site links in response. I was called stupid once here, but I am familiar with the poster's occasional hard talk, and my original post was not astute and we finally had a chuckle as we resolved it online. All is good. Very good. Please stick around. I've been at the Leica (and other) photography thing since the Sixties, too, but still some real gems are posted so frequently that I'd be surprised if we could not still learn from each other. Guest diogenes Posted November 1, 2011 Share #44 Posted November 1, 2011 You mean this? Thanks for bringing it up. You'll hate this then. Sadly, one of the ways in which this forum has changed over the years is that the number of people who choose to simply come here to relax and enjoy themselves and pass some time has fallen, whilst the number of those who take themselves faaaaar too seriously has increased. What used to be an enjoyable place to spend some time with like minded friends at times takes on the air of an invigilated exam. Woe betide anyone who dares to drift off-topic or - horrors! - makes an attempt at levity. They will be treated to a basilisk stare and a Daily Mail-style hurrumphing. Damn right there are daft questions. Those are questions that, if the OP engaged brain for a moment, they would realise are either unanswerable (what's better, 50mm or 35mm) or deeply personal (what lens should I buy next). It's not a library. It's a forum. It's powered by people. When people stop wanting to come, because everything has been sterilised, catalogued, audited and approved by the self-appointed guardians of propriety, it will be a very grey world indeed. Regards, Bill Yes, that was the one, thanks for the link. Thanks also for the link to your blog post. Surprisingly I did not hate it! In fact, i experienced no such emotion. I found it a rather indifferent and mostly forgettable piece of writing. A little flatulent and diffuse, but otherwise mostly forgettable. But thanks, thanks for sharing it. Whilst you feel a question such as "which is better 25mm or 50mm" is unanswerable or deeply personal, it is nevertheless possible, for people who are happy to do so, to offer personal opinions on the matter and have a discussion around those opinions. A newcomer may even find those discussions informative, enlightening or inspiring. If said discussion brings nothing new and reaches no conclusion I see not why that should offend you so. I see no reason why you can't leave those that wish to participate, to participate. I see no reason why you need to enter the discussion and tell them why you are not interested and why you think their conversations pointless. I see no reason why you need to mock them. It benefits no one. And you too are acting as a self appointed guardian of the forum in doing so. With regards to propriety, I can only say that we all must draw the line somewhere. I, for example, do not find it amusing, nor appropriate, to make light heart of slavery, although it appears that you are quite comfortable to do so. Fair enough, but if you replace the word "slave" with "sex-slave" or the words "slave trader" with "paedophile" or "rapist" or "wife beater" would it still remain funny? Is slavery OK for a joke? The question of propriety is a good one.
Guest diogenes Posted November 1, 2011 Share #45 Posted November 1, 2011 Agree with that. There are also too many self-promoters who use the forum as an extension of their Twitter accounts and blogs. You can tell that most of these individuals have no interest in the forum itself other than as a means of driving traffic to their websites. There's a member on here called Leica Blog who is the absolute worst for that kind of beahaviour.
lct Posted November 1, 2011 Share #46 Posted November 1, 2011 ...I have seen a thread that specifically belittles "obvious" newcomers questions or other questions deemed pointless with a series of ready made, mostly facetious, answers... I did not know this thread which made me smile personally. Coming from the Barnack's Bar it is not intended to be taken seriously.
bill Posted November 1, 2011 Share #47 Posted November 1, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) Diogenes, thank you so much for proving my point. You see, humour is a personal thing - you either find something amusing or you do not. It doesn't matter that you don't find my blog to your tastes - according to Google Analytics thousands of others do. Me, as I said already I think life is taken far too seriously all around, particularly by those who take themselves too seriously and angrily shush others who dare to make a noise. In reading your post I am reminded of Terry Pratchett's "Auditors" - they don't see much to laugh at in the ways of Man either. Incidentally I take it you take your internet identity from Diogenes of Sinope - I am sure he would approve. Thank you also for bringing attention to my little joke about being a "Gentleman Slave Trader", by the way - it is in my profile, for those who are wondering what you were getting at. It is a dig at what I do for a living, again not meant to be taken literally, except by those who don't get the joke. The only other person I recall to comment upon that was Frank - interesting company to keep. I also note that you are not above berating others who don't come up to your high standards - woe betide any who dare not toe the line, eh? Finally, you really should note the other attributes on my personal profile - you know, the ones that say my "state" is "readiness" and my "hobby" is "troll-bagging". Carry on. gyoung Posted November 2, 2011 Share #48 Posted November 2, 2011 Personally I found Bill's post amusing,(although I have never found the time to read anyones blog, not even Erwin Puts!), and it was in Barnacks, where levity is normal, and just like in a bar, is likely to be among groups (cliques?) with highly divergent views and senses of humour, have you never felt enraged by what you have overheard from the next table? But its not polite to butt in If I had asked a silly question (and I certainly have over the years) I would rather have a humorous pointer to a better way forward, than either a rude response or the forum cluttered with endless repetition of the same basic information easliy discovered by the search function. Engage brain before mouth (or keyboard nowadays). Many years have I spent in Higher Education, where it is normal to encourage students to research and discover for themselves rather than simply offer them the solutions on a plate. farnz Posted November 3, 2011 Share #49 Posted November 3, 2011 At the risk of earning Bill's pseudo-ire by momentarily directing the thread back on topic:D (oops - an attempt at humour: dons Basilisk-proof glasses) I wonder what happened to that constant ball of joy Magyar? leicanut2 Posted November 5, 2011 Share #56 Posted November 5, 2011 Some members have passed on some like me don't have any Leicas anymore And maybe just maybe a few like a lady friend of mine who posted a picture was laughed at and said, ump this forum. There are some really rude people who may not think they are hurting anyones feelings but they do. As for me I hope to get a new Leica soon and start posting some pics because I miss it. lct Posted November 6, 2011 Share #57 Posted November 6, 2011 I would dream of a world where rudeness is not higher than on this good old forum. There are strong characters and good moderators here fortunately.
Rona!d Posted November 7, 2011 Share #58 Posted November 7, 2011 Stumbled over this thread today, yes, good old times I´m in (nearly daily) e-mail contact with William since 2005, so might be able to tell you that he´s still doing fine, but photography has slowed down because he has no good lab around and he still prefers film. I forced him to buy a used C-Lux2 so he can at least "record and share" what mooves him. Instead of photography he now enjoys riding motorcycles (Triumph Bonneville and Ducati Monster) and he still has his old Morgan +8 and Defender in his stable. Looking at the last link reminded me. What happened to William G. Lamb III? He was a widely travelled and informative contributor to the old forum. Now in his retirement he sadly does not travel much anymore, so it was good he saw the world in his old life. William was a good friend. Last time i've heard of him he was retired in Florida i believe. He retired to Virginia some years ago, now living nearby his son. It´s warmer down there. Wasn't he the LandRover man? He'd have been proud of me buying an LR3, and even keeping it until it was paid off.... Chris Give me a Series II every time. Yes, some called him "Mr. Land Rover". I once had a drive in a Morgan buddys new LR3 where William gave some good driving lessons to the new owner and explained him the terrain response system. It was fun to see what "the box" can do off road. I had one for two weeks for a travel reportage and testing, I loved that car! ...I too miss William's (lambroving) input. Although he doesn't post anymore he still visits quietly - last time was a week ago. Funny I was thinking of him when we took delivery of our new Freelander TD4 HSE last week. He still has his gallery up. These are his old most enjoyable M film shots. Digital does not record light the way William prefers. I see William has started taking photographs again, which is a good thing. Not photographs, good snapshots, we use to say. I had lunch (or rather just the coffee) with William once. He showed my his various cameras in his Billingham. They were all inside individual plastic bags. He has no interest in shooting quickly, nor digital Ms. Don´t say just "Billingham", he is a proud Fogg bag owner.
andybarton Posted November 8, 2011 Share #59 Posted November 8, 2011 These are his old most enjoyable M film shots. Digital does not record light the way William prefers. His favourite film was Kodak Royal Supra - at his request, I once bought some over here and shipped it to him when it was no longer available in the US. Since that is long dead, what does he use now? ( I would ask him, but he's long since stopped replying to my emails )
luigi bertolotti Posted November 9, 2011 Share #60 Posted November 9, 2011 I remember first using the old IBM PC-about the first of its kind. It had big old floppy disks 5.25". That was right around the year you mention. It seems in about 1981 those first came out. Also remember the fist 10MB hard drive. Back then we thought it was a big revelation to have that. How times have changed, huh? Just about nostalgy of old times... I have still at home an HP150 (MS-DOS, but NOT exactly IBM PC compatible...) that, incredibly, had a 9" touch screen monitor - with graphics (HP and Tektronix - compatible) and a thermal printer EMBEDDED in the Monitor case !!! 15 MB hard disk (HUGE) with a 3,5" floppy (270KB) : year 1984, still working (but printer paper difficult to find...) , runs Visicalc (excel ancestor) Wordstar (word ancestor) DBII (access ancestor), Basic interpreter (with graphics command set) and Fortran compiler (no double precision math...)
