There is a flat ceiling just above the pointed arches which likely conceals conventional truss framing. These and the end walls would provide enough lateral resistance against outward movement of the two long walls. It appears that the buttresses, inconsistent withe the original design, were added by someone who thought that they enhanced the after the building's design.
