The little plaquette proves it ot be an historic cabin in Taxas.

That must be renown for some past events - like where ships with slaves were offboarded. 😞

It’s original use was different from what it is now. Not a cabin. No ships offloaded here. Not on the coast.

I think we drove past an interesting building like that in Chicago when going down to the waterfront where there was an old lighthouse out on the lake. The shape is similar along with the blue at the top which stood out.  If that's the one, I don't know anything about who designed it etc.

Good start, the city is correct. It is on the lakefront. This is not the elevation that faces the lake though. The tower faces West.

I think it's time for some hints:

This building was, at one time, the largest building in the world.

It has been converted to over 400 condominiums, medical offices, commercial concourse and parking. it was originally built to house the wholesale showrooms for manufacturers of one specific category of product.

Is it the Sears Roebuck headquarters Building in Chicago?

Wilson

No Not Sears Roebuck. Their original mail order headquarters complex was about 3 million square feet, and built around the same time, but was not a single contiguous building.

Oh, sorry, not Montgomery Ward either.

I think I might have walked past this building on the way to visit 900/910 Lake Shore Drive and the MCA last time I was in Chicago?

I expect you both think correctly.

McClurg Court facade of 680 North Lake Shore Drive, Chicago. a.k.a Lake Shore Place. Formerly the American Furniture Mart.

Architects: eastern half - Raeder, Nimmons and Dunning; western tower - Nimmons and Dunning. 1923-26

As to size compared to the Potala Palace: probably depends on whether one is comparing enclosed volume or some linear dimension. Does one count the Palace's solid-rock "basement" or outdoors gardens, stairways and overlooks, or walled courtyards?

Yes, Mies' 860,880,900 and 910 are just two blocks North of it.

I suspect that even when this building was built, the Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet, might have been bigger.

Wilson

The building contains approximately 3,758,893 SF,  I think that would make it about 3X that of the palace,
