I have a Zeiss 50mm F2 plannar that i bought New to match with the M8 that i bought Used, but when i got the 35mm Summaron 3.5 lens, it stays in my M8 90% of the time. My Zeiss produces more cleaner and nicley toned image, but there is something in this 60 yrs old lens that i love so much.

I can understand that. For "modern" images I use my Voigtländer lenses.

For that special feeling I have the Leitz Summitar 2/5cm and the Elmar 4/90.

I love those lenses on my M8.

I'm new To the Leica M system so only own one lens 28mm elmarit.

Interested to know what you mean by "modern" ? Images using voigtlander

Still finding my feet with rangefinders, but loving the new learning curve

After a difficult winter, the M8 gained some points back by being a great travel camera on my recent vacation to Paris. Wide lens in bag for monuments, normal lens for street shooting.

Still need to go over the images and pick a few to publish, but it felt good to get the groove back on. And the sweet Leica MP a la carte in cognac leather at the Paris store window wasn't too shabby either ;)

Trouble is, these past few weeks I've been getting a lot of diagonal lines at the top of the image (if I'm shooting verticals, they appear in the same edge, which is usually the left edge in my verticals). I found a few threads from 2007 but neither really addressed the problem. I was wondering if the collective hive mind has some newer thoughts about this.

Designed,

A few thoughts:

Do you shoot RAW and then convert? If so, did you try different converters? It could be JPEG artifacts.

Can you see the lines before doing any post-processing? How much do you push sliders such as exposure, contrast, clarity? Aggressive post-processing could be an obvious culprit.

Does it happen will all your lenses? It could be a reflection from a particular lens.

Did the camera take a hit? It could be a very small light leak - try taking a picture with the lens cap on and see if those bands appear.

Hope this helps.

And btw, I still love my M8's (well, the M8.2 a bit more than the M8;))

Thanks for your ideas!

Unfortunately I have ruled nearly all of them out already:

- the lines appear in both Aperture & ACR

- they are nearly invisible before any PP, but my b&ws are quite conservative so it shouldn't be a problem, and most certainly it hasn't been a problem before.

- this happens with at least with my 21mm Elmarit as well as 50mm Zeiss, not sure about the 35.

- the lines seem to affect bright (and possibly blue?) areas (sky), so I doubt the lens cap test will reveal anything, but will give it a go.

And before anyone asks other usual but irrelevant things:

- no, it's not the memory card

- no, it's not the battery either.

Oh well, it's a fantastic day, I'll try to go hunt some photos and see what turns up in those.

Well, I just joined the M8 club, here are some shots from my first day out with it. I have never used a rangefinder before, but like it.

All M8 + 40mm Nokton

Welcome Atracksler, and enjoy your M8!

- the lines seem to affect bright (and possibly blue?) areas (sky), so I doubt the lens cap test will reveal anything, but will give it a go.

I did this yesterday. After shooting a number of images of a lamp at 16 seconds in ISO 640, both with body cap and with a lens + lens cap, and then boosting up the images to the max, I got some interesting results.

Body caps showed some minor hotspots, but these seemed to move depending on body cap. Lenses were a different story. 21 Elmarit caused a bright hotspot at the top of the image - which could've the problem. The 50 Zeiss caused a larger area of far less light - but on the lower side of the image.

All in all the cap test was pretty inconclusive, apart from the fact the sensor is having centerfold issues.

After this I went out at shot a few images with my 35 Zeiss, which repeated the problem. It appears the problem is related to the blue channel, since a bright blue bus repeated the effect.

I just got a word from the local Leica importer that I should bring in my camera and send it to Solms for a check up.

The circuit board or the sensor may need to be replaced then.

If that's the case Leica will probably offer you a deal for a trade-up to the M-E.

Is this the current policy with the M8 on circuit board/sensor repairs? I certainly wouldn't mind an offer to trade-up.

I just received the estimate for M8, which was doing "stripes" or "streaks" at the top edge of the image, especially in the blue channel. 510€ to have it fixed and calibrated. Not bad for Leica, but it's starting to be a bit much against what value the camera has these days.

Hai everyone,

nice to meet you all here ...

actually i've been watching this forum long time ago, but did'nt dare to post anything, hahhaa ...

I purchased my M8 around 3 yrs ago and never regret of it, i've had chance to upgrade to M9 for almost 3 times and always sell it again after 1-2 weeks of use ... I dont know if its happened only to me or others M8's users also, i never like the colour of M9 coz its too saturate for my eyes, if i can say its too canons, ha5, apologize for my poor language ...

And when the new M release, im tempted to upgrade it, ha4, but after hold it and give a try, found out that the colour and that Leica looks is not there at all (imo) ... Its more on Fuji's look but with much better dimension, so im hold on my M8 again... hahahha ...

all in all ... love M8 really much ... cant depart from it plus Fuji XE1 on d bag.

regards,

jeff

Pretty new here, and wanted to upload a couple of M8 files (with 50mm ASPH Summilux). Have had my first RF M now for 4 - 5 months. Loving the b&w and some colour. Want to upgrade to new Leica M or MM, can't make up my mind.

Hai ... if you really like BW then go with MM ... its out of camera picture already show the character and plus ltle bit post processing make it even nicer ... just my two cents.
