Leica M9-P ????

In a recent interview with Panasonic UK product and marketing managers, linked to at the m43rds rumours site, there is discussion about the introduction in June of another Leica branded lens for the m43rds range, a 25/1.4 (e.g. a 50-lux for the G/GH/GF series). The timing of June syncs with the rumours in this thread, so perhaps a Leica branded G3 with the 25/1.4 is what is in the offing?

If it were auto-focus, that would put them above the Voightlander 25/.95 for convenience.

I use the 25mm f/.95 and focusing is difficult, largely because the view magnifying button is poorly placed. (left control on the wheel). It is very sharp lens stopped down, and focuses to a few inches, too.

Leica have tweeted a link to Leicarumors today with just the word "hmm"

Make of that what you will.

I have seen it.

I don't know how interpret it. It sounds as distrust.

The pointed rumor site bets for a simple cosmetic change, sapphire glass cover and 500 euros (700 dollars) of cost increase.

So maybe there is more than that.

Bigger red dot.. about the size of a quarter. 3D HD video. Mountain ,flower ,running man symbols.

But really... anyone know why they can't just put regular glass instead of sapphire? I know sapphire glass is harder and all but probably cost quite a bit more. Also I think I've asked this before and can't find my own posts... is there a "my threads" button on this forum?

i'm wondering if they'll offer it as an upgrade for current M9 owners.

upgrade to saphire glass, and a MP style top plate.

i bet lots of people would be down.

i may be one of them;)

This is an important clue. First of all I suspect a typo and the first "m" should be an "a". It follows that the rumours are not about a camera at all! Who's with me on this.

The camera that Seal's carrying looks very much like the usual M9 prototype sans 'M8' disguise and w/ different finish to me...

Best,

I do not think so. Seal's camera does not have the "M8" or "M9" engraving on the front.

It is possible that Seal has some type of "a la carte" M9 made by Leica for him... Just chrome finish and no engravings or red dot, but, as I have read here, the red dot is placed on a recessed circle carved on the brass cover, and Seal's camera does not have it.

You can get Solms service to do that for you any time you want.

That's how I have vulkanite on my steel grey M9...

I'm surprised nobody has posted this little hint from preview section of the 4/11 issue of LFI...

"Product Springtime.

What new developments and product maintenance measures will Leica still come up with during the first half of the year? Let us surprise you."

First half of the year ? Fits in quite nicely with the rumored date 21/6.

This and the tweet from Leica IMO pretty much confirms the rumors. It's going to be an interesting solstice :)

Yes, that's what I meant: no M8/9 engraving at the front, but also no recession for red/black dots, which is exactly the same as the eBay-hosted pic above, it just shows the normal MP-screw...

Doesn't look like anything special to me, except it's probably an early A'La Carte...

Best,

Michael

Well, the eBay camera has a "M8" engraving...

The Seal's camera is the first one I see without that engraving.

Anyway, of course, you may be right. It could be a mere cosmetic version of a regular M9 made specifically for Seal, but...

... the "new developments and product maintenance" clue is very interesting indeed. Product maintenance may be the firmware updates, and "new developments"... that is the point. I don't know if mere cosmetic changes should be named "new developments"...

Leica cannot make a standard M8/9 without some kind of dot - there is a triangular hole behind that dot to access the vertical RF adjustment.

Sure, but screws don't fit triangular holes. It would be prohibitively expensive (except maybe for somebody like Seal ;)) as they would have to set up a special one-off milling and casting process for the top plate. It would probably drive the pricepoint beyond the M9Ti.

Looks difficult to make a smaller full-frame, the M9 is already by far the smallest existing digital full frame. As technology goes, improvement in sensor noise looks in the way. A little more MPs could be interesting at least commercially as it would allow to really take profit of the differences between ASPH lenses and the other ones (older Leica, or CV), but probably too soon to sell real competition to the S2.

Another interesting one would be a sort of M8-2, APS-C format into a smaller body, sensor borrowed from mainstream DSLRs - this was the idea of the Seiko/Epson/Cosina/Voigtlander; Cosina could make it, but there are still too many good used M8s on the market.

My main complaint with the M9 is to remember how to get out of menus, quick and dirty way is switch off the camera.

Two more minor complaints:

-would be nice to leave the user with 2 or 3 "free", unattributed 6bit codes that he can program and name as he likes for his own 'special' lenses (e.g. the best lens settings I have found for my CV 12mm and 15mm are the 2.8/24, I hate seeing '2.8/24' in the image data. The 12mm is not a real competition to Leica...)

-manual white balance "tungsten" is not enough with monument lighting (high power lamps, I dont know their type, it gives sort of yellowish monochrome). Well, raw + lightroom should cure the problem anyway.
